I could hear the swoosh, click, hiss, whoomp, roar of the on-demand gas water heater in my first tiny apartment in Urasoe City when I read the last post. It wasn't wood fired, but it was certainly Japanese. Being right outside the bathroom window I could appreciate its function, especially on cold mornings. It seems the same design could be used with a wood stove although I'll admit that without the ability to turn the heat on and off on demand you'd have to deal with the initial steam pulse as the water entered the already hot coil.
