That would be situational awareness and having a plan. That is the primary thing I do, whether I am driving down the highway (Dad told me to always have an escape plan), eating at a restaurant, walking down the street, stopping for gas, sitting at a stop light or just sitting in my own living room watching television.
Or just walking to the DAV Door on my volunteer day.. Empty handed the first trip, if work needs to go inside I do that on the second trip after I clear the building.
Dad taught us to always do a safety check by first using the drive way's message of foot prints and tire tracks, the drive way always left good imprints as it was made of gravel and sand.
