Cats

And I always thought the outside cats just tolerated the possums.

 

Independence Day 2023 and I'm sitting at a red light at a major intersection. Across from me in the double left turn lanes I see something crawling along on the far side of the first car in the far turn lane. This puts who ever it is at the edge of 45 MPH traffic. There are ten lanes of asphalt on that road, HOT asphalt. It's so hot today I had soda cans burst in the car.

There he is, crawling along looking under the car with his back to traffic.

Then I see why. A kitten is hot footing it under the car, just out of reach. The driver of the car gets out and shoos the kitten to the man on the far side. My heart stopped as I thought the kitten would bolt into traffic. This must've been a cat man because he caught the little grey kitten by the scruff and quickly wrapped it up in a towel. All the cars were making the left turn as I made my turn and watched in my rear view mirror.

I thought about that poor little kitten on that massive hot piece of dangerous asphalt and the men who risked scorched hands and knees to save it.

Wouldn't surprise me a bit if the kitty gets named Independence.

I have a similar reaction to feral cats that don't run from the dog. If they just sit and growl they're as potentially dangerous as a Mountain Lion. It's the old cats that give me the shivers the most. They don't have a lot to live for, and I've seen cats go completely berserk and defy gravity trying to tear my face off. I don't even want to think about what an old growling cat would do to the dog. We just move along, backing away very slowly.
