@Bear, hope you don't mind me posting this here. Didn't have time to look for the koa Bowie post.

Koa bowie made by Bear was thirsty for coconut water...

Good idea, and BEAR knowing how much I like stainless, well this is a good spot, so I'll post a "Members Project" tomorrow that uses a lot of stainless.

When opening young coconuts, I try to shave right up to the shell, and then gently pierce it and pour out the water. Bowie bit a little too hard. Big squirt and gush. I hit my wife with the juice about eight feet away. Juice all over the counter. Still got two cups of water, not including the spillage and squirtage. I'm guessing we lost about half a cup.

I might put a guard on it, but that is a nice looking piece of steel. How well does the offset lanyard work out? I thing all of the ones I have ever seen are basically inline.

    Works fine. I don't use a lanyard.

Haha. I said the same thing until I found myself chopping a boat out of a small log jamb while leaning too far out of the boat. Haha. That knife was so crappy, man. Ha.

Did I miss the specs on that knife? 8" or so on that blade sound right?

a smart man would just drill two 1/4" holes in the coconut, one on the top, and then one on the bottom, and let the water leak out into a pan.... Then worry about chopping the Empty Nut, after that....

I think it comes down to more traditional methods of accessing the milk...... instead of grabbing a modern tool, cheating the experience per se. Especially when you are trying to teach the ways of our fore fathers. Using modern tools works great for accuracy and expediency of a project..... but it is paramount to know how to do the task with the old methods & tools IMO.

I don't own anything that could drill into a coconut...

A brace and bit would do very nicely, and requires no power.[IMG]

I learned the "old ways" at Bellows Beach, taught by a Hawaiian. He started with Machete, made a dehusking stick from a local tree, popped the husk right off and then hit the shell on time and nothing was lost.

Second time was from a friend a who lived on Maui. Stevie is now long gone, lost when an inter island plane went down. Great Guy rich as any one could be, his people had worked hard in the early years of Hawaii. He knew the old ways as well as the new and elected to join up so he could stay close to home.

Of course it didn't work out that way, Vietnam, PI, Taiwan, Hong Kong and other places I can't mention, but we had Fun.

But I don't chop the nut. I pierce or cut it to empty the juice, then crack it by striking smartly on its "head" on the line that goes between its "eyes." I only slice away the husk of a young coconut. Mature nut, tear away.

A sharp pointed knife will drill right through the eyes.

    Or there is this one

Pretty easy to make one ;)

I've seen the spiky looking one before. But fun with knife. You can open a young coconut even with bare hands. And young coconut is easily scooped out with a spoon. Easy way to get mature nut meat out is to scrape it.
