We used to say that "A bitching Marine is a happy Marine." People talking about problems is a good thing. When they stop talking, they sometimes find other ways to make themselves heard.
And likewise we owe our honor and life to support you. LEO's need to believe that Joe Citizen will have their back if overwhelmed by bad guys. GB
The obvious problem that LEOs will have with Joe Citizen backing them up is knowing Joe well enough to allow it. That is a real worry for them, not knowing who the backup is for. Get to know your locals before the need arises.
Exactly. Unless it was life or death and I knew the LEO's backup wasn't gonna be pulling up soon and unloading into me I'd be hard pressed to do more than continue videotaping the incident for evidence.
LOL well I've seen the way backup responds in my neighborhood. I mean if the cop was seriously loosing and the sirens sounded a ways off yet I sure as hell wouldn't let the man die, but I don't have a death wish either.
We have some here I would a lot rather wear an a$$ whooping than take the chanse of them being my back up. Men that has never been in a real fight and scared to take a punch they rely on the Im the police to much. I learned along time ago some of these good ol'boy's don't care if you are 101st you got to fight to arrest them. The boots always scare me that they will end up in that situation and shoot someone that just needed an adjustment not a killing. Aorund here these guy's respect the man not the badge if you are willing to give some shoe leather or take some they respect it. If you hide behind that badge and other officer's youll never get respect froom them and one day you will get hurt. which I have to say I agree with them on that if you cant do the job without 10 other officers and cant make an arrest without shoving a gun in a mans face you are not an officer your a punk and in the wrong job.
You hit that nail square for sure. We have some great guys around here and some I wouldn't piss on if they were on fire ,the ones that go out of their way to up hold the law and still relies on his judgment of the people involved is the one that will get all the back up he could ever need. The others just walk in with that I'm better than anyone attitude because I wear a badge will find that they are alone when push comes to shove . You sir strike me as one that would get all the back up he could ever use both blue and civilian !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IMO, "they" or some LEOs are hiding behind a gun which means they are "afraid" and people who are "afraid" often apply bad judgment. What really scares me about this whole armed to the teeth police is the "average Joe" pays more attention to shot after damage than the "experts."
The problem is they feel they don't have to answer to anyone and thats when thing go wrong. I have an open door policy any citizen can come into my office set down drink a cup of coffee and ask questions. I try to answer them and if I don't know I tell them I don't know but I will find out. I get the answer and I call them or stop by their house. We ordered new vehicle and I had 30 people catch me out and ask about them so I would take them and let them look at it inside and out. Explain to them what things were and how we used it to protect them. Like the H&K UMP45's we got an old farmer was looking arouind in my crusier next thing I know we get a delivery. I tell my guy's all of our equipment belongs to the citizens just as much as it does us and they have a right if they want to see it damn it let them look. They have a question about an officers action I explain it or find out why, if the officer was wrong I make him go tell the citizen I was wrong and this is why I did it and Im sorry. If he don't 2 weeks with out pay. If the officer is right I stand behind him through hell and high water. Ill explain to the citizen as best as possible why the Deputy was right. The one biggest no no and I fired a guy 3 years ago over it if a citizen comes in to express concerns and that Deputy goes out with the intent to follow that citizen and write citation's or arrest they are fired. Now this applies to our good citizens not joe crackhead. Our citizens feel and are part of our department and they stand behind all of us at the Sheriff's dept right and sometimes even when we are wrong. They go as far to bypass their local dept and request us to handle calls. I dont know what has happen to the L.E.O's over time but thats how I have always been as a officer and a supervisor. Our citizens make us and we owe them the best we can give them back.
Alphadog, Many a County down here in sunny Florida could use officers and or Sheriffs like you. Skeeters, Snowbirds, Blue haired ancients, Snakes and Gators ain't all that bad! Are you sure you wouldn't like to relocate. We have fantastic fishing too!
You do your job as a professional; my compliments to you and to others who are the same. True, too many in LE, lawyers, and the judicial system believe they are above the law. From the far Left to the far Right many Americans are angry. So the fuel is available but the catalyst is lacking. Our idiotic "government" has left our borders wide open for anyone, including the Mexican Drug Cartels to walk in. The potential for our various LE agencies to get into a real (FA, grenades, RPG?) firefight is high to almost inevitable. In urban/suburban settings the potential collateral damage is close to being equal.
There is supposedly a small camp here local. I attempted driving my through a rock quarry and making a somewhat stealthy approach and was quickly turned around by the sight of a pair of guys I spotted ahead of me standing beside white Jeep Cherokees and sporting AR style rifles. Could have just been a patrol from the nearby state prisons but these guys weren't in the gray polyester prison issue uniforms and their black tactical uniforms weren't sporting ODRC's Special Response Team logos.
