There are six of them and they are in a village. How many other combatants are behind that wall? What comms do they have? What resources do they have in the field.

You will have about one second for the sound to travel 400 yards, and about one second for them to realize what has happened after the sound gets there. You would maybe have three seconds after you fire for them to react. With that m14 rifle best case scenario is you can take two out. Now there are four and maybe a dozen behind that wall.

I think if you pull that trigger you are starting a serious e&e. That ain't no jungle and likely not much cover.

True, you are elevated a bit at a good range.... you have plenty of time to pick off the remaining 4. They are going to go spray and pray.... you can take your time, if you choose. If not, whack the two, call in an artillery strike as you slip away.... ;)

If you are calling Artie anyway, why waste the ammo on a chance you'll miss? (Not to mention giving away your position.)

Somewhere along the Ho Chi Minh Trial I think this thread got derailed! But tomorrow is another day, and with the experience I think I've tapped into Today, It's my belief that we can bring Y'all Home from behind that scope even if we take a round about route. Thanks Y'all.

Good because some of us are true novice at all of this and have to go re-read page one and two again.

It depends on who has labeled me as a threat.

Back to page one and the reason to talk about the scope and long range shooting. Most of us haven't had any long distance shooting experience, don't have a place to practice it, and all to well realize that 90 % of what we are told about it is either BS or advertising hype to sell us a $100 scope with some gimmick to make it worth $400. When the real users, no matter which conflict they were in, speak, I for one am interested and eager to get their view. They are here because of either their skills, the skills of those who were with them, or the Grace of God. Good enough credentials for me and willing to listen for their pearls of wisdom, besides, you can never look at to much good airplane, chopper, or gun, porn.

I will admit however that it was one heck of a lot of fun to set up and test fire the canon system on the F-104 and you had the ability to set the harmonization on the gun, though I don't remember just how any more, to tear the heck out of the butts. It was slightly noisy on the ground to fire it in the test area. Not very portable, but would make a really good long range sniper weapon. Ammo supply might be a slight problem too.

Only place around here that isn't a pistol range wanted $1800 & me to apply for approval for me to have the honor of paying another member $150 "range officer fee" on a day they happen to be off and willing to do it (and someone else in the organization make all the calls for me, no learning the special member numbers for me)...nope nope. Granted, I could learn to make those 1500+ shots there, but I ain't got that kinda tolerance for bullshit.

Never thought of my self as a threat, except for the rats and ground squirrels stealing my chickens feed and eggs.
    It's a game we play ,
I sneak around the chicken yard and shoot through the fence at the rodents as they scurry out with what ever they can steal.
The chickens know I'm no threat ,and the wild rabbits know , and the doves and other wild birds know I'm no threat to them.
Those all feed while I'm taking shots at the rats and ground squirrels. It's difficult because the chickens are always giving away my position and the squirrels have learned to read the chickens. Much like some one hunting in the same area you are and scare up the local birds , that's when things get complicated.
Wild life have safe critters that always keep a sharp eye out for any thing different , you spook that critter, and they all high tail it out of there.
Some hunters use a fake "safe bird" to dupe the locals to feel that there is nothing to worry about .
There are game wardens that actually put out those 3D target deer to entrap hunters shooting in the wrong places .
It occurs to me that if you could have a few of these decoys, that might just tempt some desperate moron to fire at , he would be giving away his position and you'd have much more to work with .
Using a bow, or sling shot and completely expendable arrows you could perfectly set flag markers during a fire fight. these flags at the enemies end won't help him much ,and seeing that your placing them for your view ,it would be foolish for the enemy to try an remove them .

That's very true, but even a $400 scope typically isn't going to cut it if we're talking long range shooting. On the subject of scopes, there are plenty of useless ones out there, and most people are on a budget or if they do have a few hundred to spend, it just isn't enough. There's almost no glass available that's really worth the money in the sub-$1000 range if you're after high quality, that's just the truth. But, the good news is you can make some compromises without having to jeopardize your effectiveness, and that's where SWFA comes into play. What makes a great scope for long range? You want good glass and good turrets that track perfectly over time with continuous use. You could skip the turret tracking issue and go with a fixed power scope with quality glass and this will get you out to 1000 meters no problem with some practice. The US Army knows this fact, and this is why they tend to use the fixed power scopes (and one of them I linked in this post).
But, for crying out loud, don't trust my word or anybody's testament online --experience it for yourself. Plenty of people have bought a scope on a budget and found the turrets don't track properly with active use and they won't hold a zero. The bottom line is, if you really want exceptional quality, you simply must pay for it. I linked the SWFA scope above to show how an entry level shooter can own quality glass, and for a reasonable price. It's not the best, it doesn't compare to the $2000+ S&B scopes, but it will be reliable and work very well in combat conditions. And don't believe me, research SWFA for your self. ;)

Ditto on SWFA for performance, ruggedness, low cost, and proven track record. Most people think they need more glass than they really do, and in general better glass will do you better than greater magnification.

Obligatory link to Sniper 101. The series is great for equipment, mechanics, and technique. What we are seeing in this thread involves some of that, but also gets into the more important "should you take that shot: and "will taking that shot get me killed?"

Truly enjoying this thread and hoping it will continue for I have not done any distance shooting. I do have a 200m range only a few minutes away but know of nothing else that has anything beyond 200m in the area.

I'm glued.... My Military training taught me electrical theory.... :D

I'm good with a pistol, but even though I have a nice Nikon Mil Dot mounted on my .308 Savage FCP, I never learned how to use it.

I think that's true for most of us. Just like a golfer who eschews training and practice to improve his game and buys better golf clubs instead, we substitute equipment for training and practice then are disappointed with the results. One of the (many) reasons I'm relocating next year is for an abundance of long range shooting prospects.

SWFA makes an awesome scope for the budget, on par with Leupold and getting close on some of the other higher end equipment. One that almost never gets any love is Millett scopes! These were tested by several Mil teams and found to be of the required quality, the ONLY down side was the weight was pretty high. My self, having used every brand of top quality scope issued to troops in the last 30 years have settled on Night Force Optics for serious work, these have more then proven themselves up to the task and can usually be found in the $1200 to $2100 range, mostly depending on the set up and the features you choose. I prefer the 3.5X15X50 NXS Light Seeker series with the MOAR Reticle 1/8 MOA windage turret mod. These scopes offer one of the best sets of turrets you can find any any price, and the glass is second to none! I would take this over any S/B or U.S.O. any day!
