Now, explosives are more tightly controlled than guns are. While we don't know what kind of explosives this dipstick had, we know he had them. He also had bomb-making materials in his house. So if he couldn't have gotten a gun, does anyone think he wouldn't have still tried to carry out some kind of attack? It seems like he at least had a Plan B in the works, one that involved a bomb to some degree or another. And none of the explosive controls on the books did jack squat. The problem is, again, that he wanted to kill Trump for whatever reason. The fact that he used an AR-15 is largely irrelevant. A Bernie Bro tried to kill a number of Republican congressmen with an SKS in Alexandria a while back. Those are the scary ones, the ones that will keep people wondering and talking about this for years to come. Maybe there was no cause or agenda, maybe he just wanted to be famous for killing someone famous, and Trump was just right down the road in an area that he knew well.
Yeah, but that doesn't mean that the Secret Service can't tell the local LEOs how to secure the area. It's not like the local Andys and Barneys have a lot of experience at protecting Presidents and former Presidents. One or two guys with shotguns could have secured those roof-tops and this could have been prevented.

I was curious to hear Dan Bonginos take on it. He was a secret service agent for 12 years. And assigned to presidential security details. He was talking about the snipers, or more accurate the counter snipers. There was a viral internet story going around that one of them purportedly said they had the shooter in thier sights but couldn't get permission to shoot. Bongino calls BS on that. Any LEO sniper has the green light to shoot if there is an imminent danger. They do not wait for permission. And they don't have to wait for the shooter to open fire. According to his sources the counter sniper team was trying to get a shot. There is a small lip on the roof of the building. The shooter was behind it and they couldn't get a clear shot until he raised up and started shooting. Makes sense.
Great points, I do like Bongino's perspective as he's not a wanna-be, he actually knows. I'm not too sure about the response being nothing, though. And there was zero communication. In the time they could ID an active shooter, Trump should have been immediately taken off stage. That's more than 2 whole minutes of - W. T. F. - and a whole lot of nothing coming from the SS and security team/local law enforcement. Also I'm pretty sure those .308 rifles, assuming that's the standard still these days -can punch through the roof like cardboard and utterly eviscerate the shitbag hiding on the other side. I dunno.

At that range, and with his equipment, he should have been able to disable the rifle whether he could see the shooter or not.
At the very least, counter fire would disrupt the assasin's attempt to shoot, and drive him to cover while the cops got off their duffs and assaulted him.
