Wd lost a Boy Scout troop competition, due to a bad navigator during a Jamboree. He could have peed on the ground and followed the stream, but no one was allowed to help him. Each had their own jobs. We ended up hours late, and miles off course. He is the reason I always have a ball compass attached to my pack or coat now, as backup.

 

I would bet the crew had a ball at his expense! Did the captain have a "chat" with him afterwords ?

Those pilots in that image have both skills and balls. That kind of landing is very difficult and dangerous. The issue is the rotor blades are in ground effect on one side of the craft (which gives them more lift) but not on the other. Tends to cause the helicopter to pitch or roll and it takes a ton of collective to counter and if the pilot isn't quick and accurate enough bad things can happen. Here is a video that shows it pretty clearly. The pilot was a shade low, hooked his rear wheels on the ship's deck and didn't get over the deck fully. Then asymmetric ground effect off the deck rolled it right over. It also looks like the rear wheels might have also been snagged exacerbating or maybe even precipitating the roll. A really bad day here.
