Had that happen while working on my place, 30 feet off the ground and no safety! You see the carbiner was the safety as I had just unhooked my static line with loops tied in it so I could move down about two feet.

Sure got the heart a pounding.

The same thing happened in CHINA during the Boxer Rebellion in 1899. Silver Rules and paper is for wiping.

It's actually gas generation via explosion of Sodium Azide. Energetic!

Sodium azide - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Our resident pyros will be able to explain it so much better than I can. [micro]

When AirBags were first being Invented, they were inflated with Compressed Gas.... But it proved to be to slow, when calculating the Trigger Time Delay and the Valve Opening Delay. The impact would happen before the Bag was fully inflated. So they went to Sodium Azide as a Gas Generating System, which cut the Valve Opening Delay, out completely, and allowed a shortened Trigger Time Delay, due to the Velocity of Detonation of Sodium Azide, initiated by an Electric Squib. Azides are well understood Energetic Materials, and are used as Primary Initiators in many applications. Lead Azide being one of the more common Azides in Commercial Use. It was a common Energetic, in Primes for Ammunition, before the Styphanates became the Energetic of choice, later, as they are more Heat, Temperature and Humidity, stable than the Azide Salt. .....

Yes and no, kell. It uses a combustible that expands rapidly when the wire running through it is heated by electrical current. It expands rapidly. But it is not a compressed gas. Kind of like the igniter on a model rocket motor

Ok. I need to read to the end of a discussion to not look like a dummy when I post. So many others with a lot of smarts in here

Yes @Mike , there are some very smart critters on here. The only airbags I have ever had to deal with WERE compressed gas. They had a canister for it, but they were pretty early versions. (One reason we removed them, we could not trust them.)

Felt dumb enough oversimplifying the way air bags work after two posts had everything. Then I typo'd

Think of it as a training experience , you learned something, and I bet you check your gear better next time. I do high work in fall arrest gear as well.

Oh Boy, I've had the seals request permission to conduct training exercises on boarding and disabling a offshore platform, We granted permission and turned off our submersible pumps so they would not get sucked in.
Never knew when they were coming, They are that good !

The thing about Energetic Materials is, you do NOT get more than 1 mistake..... and sometimes that one mistake, ends your career..... When I was an Apprentice Blaster, learning the Trade, my Mentor, was very specific, in teaching ME, that you check, and recheck, and recheck AGAIN, at each step, and have your Mucker go back and check each step, AGAIN... The bigger the charges, the more you check.... Yea, it takes longer to do it that way, but if you do it correctly, you never make a Catastrophic Mistake, that ends your days.... and that is a GOOD THING..... I still have ALL my Fingers and Toes.... and never in 40 years, have I had a Misfire..... .....
