My 9mm pistol of choice, is my Browning HiPower. It has been my Pack Gun, in the alaskan bush, for three decades. I keep one clip of standard 125 Grain FMJ, and two Clips of 115 Grain Jacketed Hollow Point Ammo, both powered by Bullseye powder, when traveling. It isn't for animal protection, but it will feed me, and deal with any miscreants, that should cross my path, should I have to ditch, or get weathered in, somewhere.

IMHO any ammunition, in any gun, is better than NONE.

I load all my ammo. I shoot what I load. This gives a decisive advantage in being familiar with what comes out the end of your barrel and where it is likely to go. I generally load relatively hot for my carry and competition guns. My basic load for paper punching in .45 acp is 6.1 gr. Win 231 with a 200 gr cast swc, I have a quantity of Ranger HP in 200 gr that gets stoked for carry. My .38 super gets 124 gr hp with 10.4 gr of N105.

I like Winchester SilverTips for most handguns if I can find 'em.

Just my opinion and my reasoning behind switching all of my pistols to some form of .45: ......45 ACP ball ammo will work just fine, where smaller rounds (i.e., .38/9mm) may benefit from the newer HP/hydra-shok self-defense rounds, but 9mm ball is not adequate.

I base this not on personal experience, but from what I've read about why the U.S. Marines switched from .38 long Colt to .455 revolvers during the Moros Uprising in the Philippines back in the early 1900s. This eventually led to the adoption of the M1911.

Another factor to consider is cost: .45 ball ammo is cheap...those boutique self-defense round are fairly pricey in contrast.

    9mm vs
Why? Read the actual numbers. Make an INFORMED decision. I get more bang for my buck with a 9mm with equal damage. I do load out Hydra Shocks for the extra soft tissue boomage.

Trust me, before the .mil and police swapped out to the 9mm, there were studies done. TONS of studies. I was in the Navy during the transition from .45 to 9mm.

As with anything YMMV. Unless and UNTIL you have shot a human being with BOTH a 9mm and a .45, you personally have ZERO experience to base the choice of 9mm versus .45 other than personal preference. Saying anything else makes you look like a gun bigot. For me, it is raw data numbers coupled with cost and availability. Make mine a 9.

... uh... what about reading other people's experience. I think you need a nap.

Hardball will do for me at any range I can anticipate needing a side arm. If one isn't enough, there are more as far away as the mag. Farther away, well, there is a selection to be made, and probably time to make it.

If I relied on other people's experiences over my personal experience I would be basing a decision on biased information. I prefer to look at hard data, etc. et al. Science doesn't lie. People's experiences, especially relating to occurrences during firefights are highly suspect. Too many variables, up to and including the placement of your shot will affect the outcome. The human brain does not process information like a normal cognitive. I could go on a long discourse on human reaction to life and death situations, but it would be moot.

I would rather 3 solid hits with a 9 over three grazing hits with a .45.
As with anything, (and since you skipped this part from my previous post) YMMV.

Did you go off your meds or take too much??? LOL.

I use Double Tap or Buffalo Bore in all my handguns and use the heaviest bullet weight available.

Which, of course, points to practice, not an inherent advantage to the hole size.

To be more specific. Three solid hits is three solid hits. Discuss caliber AFTER you make it out in one piece.
