ruined and abandoned transportation. Detroit is so famous for its ruins, people travel from Europe to take tours to photograph the remains.

You may even think you know all of the reasons the city tanked. You may be right, bu this fellow has a slightly different take - as an Urban Planner, he makes some very good points - the lack of coherent neighborhoods being one of many.
    (Nine Reasons Why Detroit Failed)

This is worth the read, and informative too boot. Here is a short extract to show why this, IMO< is worth your time:
" But here’s the thing. Buffalo and Cleveland have suffered the same kind of economic loss, but have not (quite) fallen to the same depths as Detroit. In fact, Pittsburgh suffered as much economically as Detroit, and is now poised for an amazing Rust Belt comeback. Any number of cities have had as troubled a racial legacy as Detroit, without being as adversely impacted. And Detroit certainly hasn’t cornered the market on political corruption, as long as Chicago exists."

He asks why has Detroit failed so utterly, when other cites have the same problems? HE then offers 9 reason why the crater is so deep.

It is now 2018 and things are vastly different in the US.
    How different you might ask?

I mentioned tours of ruins as a tourist attraction.

Many of the 'ruins' are now under development - or perhaps, redevelopment. Others properties have been purchased and fenced, guarded and are getting cleaned up.

Here is an article about that effort.

Detroit isn't out of the woods yet, but things are looking up under a US economy now no longer headed down the toilet...

Elections are funny things - they have an impact.

So - tomorrow is election day, get up off your bootie and cast a ballot - only that way can this real change - a change for the positive - continue.

I saw an article a few years ago about Detroit has an estimated 25,000 street lights out.

You don't even have to leave the US to visit a shit hole country.

the city has plans to remove over 10,000 abandoned buildings in these empty 'neighborhoods' - this year.

The grassy meadow above is an area already cleared.

Detroit may be salvaged, in part, but it is still very much an almost-dead carcass.
