Picture one fell right in front of my truck, a death blow times 2 if the timing was different. (Sorry about the duplicate pic) Someday the “big one” is coming and tens of thousand of folks will be completely screwed. (Possibly much more) This small one had some completely screwed.

@Meat Why hasn't the US moved to putting this power lines underground? I'm not talking about the big main lines with their towers and clear-cut rights-of-way, but all the residential lines and etc. Yeah, the cost would be great initially but long-term savings would pay it off. The one thing the guy did correctly when building my home is putting my power lines underground, think I am the only house on the road that has this...of course the power lines servicing my road are on poles and we get a tree across them every couple of years knocking out our power but....

Anyway, I am curious why they haven't moved more in this direction

Tremendous expense. If it’s new construction it’s easy, nothing in the ground in the way. If I had to guess underground primary cable is probably 20 times more per foot than ACSR 556 MCM for example. (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced) Conduit prices are unbelievable too!

    Zimmy Wait, I'm not ready!

I think if you don't have the underground wire shielded and conduited there is a big loss of energy literally going to ground.

Thats kinda on the edge of what I know about power transmission. I may be wrong.
