I personally see it as things coming full circle. Yule was a mostly secular holiday celebrated by Norse pagans before being co-opted by Christians (at the point of a sword), now we have Christmas being co-opted back into a secular holiday (by force of the courts). Seems perfectly fair to me.
Bah Humbug!! It could be argued that the celebration of Christmas as remembered by -06 in the near Norman Rockwell past, is pretty much a relatively recent phenomenon....celebration of Christmas in past centuries has varied greatly, and at times had actually been banned...such as during Cromwell's time in Britain when the protestants felt it was a bit too Popish for the spiritual welfare of the nation. It is clear that the Christian churches had borrowed, mixed and matched customs and practices from Judaic (Hunukka) and pagan beliefs and incorporated them into Christian traditions. So what are we missing if the public celebration of christian mythology through pagan symbolism is neutred??? I see no reason why one set of religion's myths and fables should have precedence over any other in a society...and would not miss the "holiday" component (nor the holyday component for that matter)....for me it is just like any other day...a day to be worked or not as circumstances require. I'd be happy if folk were just a bit more humane to each other every day of the year....instead of the faux goodness expressed in celebrations on one or two holydays of the year.
