Science Astronomy and Biology The Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence 2024-06-01

Ironic that while we search for ET there is evidence that he has already found us!

Since 1995, astronomers have discovered over 5000 exoplanets. Many of them are gas giants like Jupiter, since they are the easiest to spot with our current technology. Many Earth-size rocky planets have also been found, mostly orbiting M-type red dwarf stars, such as around TRAPPIST-1 which contains at least seven. They are easier to see since red dwarfs are smaller than our own Sun, a Type G yellow star. The closest exoplanet Proxima b, orbits our closest star, the red dwarf Proxima Centauri, at 4.2 light years distant. But it is probably a barren rock devoid of atmosphere due to its star's active flares and intense radiation bombardment. No 'Earth twins' of similar size, mass and gravity within the habitable zone of its star with an oxygen/nitrogen atmosphere and liquid water has been found yet. But given the immense size of the universe, it is statistically impossible for a planet or many planets like this to exist and one that has or had developed an intelligent civilization. Hopefully, I can see that within my lifetime.

Until we learn to warp space or uncover the secrets of Quantum Entanglement, we're stuck here it would seem. Unless of course ascension awaits us after these bodies die.

The Alcubierre warp drive is still only theoretical. The Project Orion study from the 1960s seems the most doable with present-day technology, the one where nuclear bombs were exploded behind the spacecraft to propel it up to a fraction of the speed of light, but who would approve something like that today? Project Daedalus, a study from the British Interplanetary Society in the 1970s proposed an unmanned two-stage nuclear fusion rocket to get to Barnard's Star in 50 years. So, we are a long way from the starship Enterprise right now. But short-term (yeah, like the next 100 years) barring interstellar flight, nuclear fusion craft can still explore and colonize our Solar System.

Well, considering Voyager has been gone almost 50 years and hasn't yet traveled a light day yet.......I think we have a long way to go.

Not intelligent extraterrestrial life, but possibly ancient Martian microbial life. Still a significant discovery to find this elsewhere in our own Solar System. We'll see about Europa, Enceladus, Titan and other moons of gas giants, too.

Most likely a comet. Just an unusual one, not originating in our Solar System.
