I'm not sure what it is. The two sharp edges are beveled on both sides, the saw edge is still sharp, and the end blade has an odd angled cut that matches the angle at the end of the handle. The blade is not flexible. It has the same parts as an old buffalo Skinner but not the shape. Any ideas?
Rather short for a saw-tooth edge. I wonder if it may once have been longer, was broken or shortened then the tip edge reshaped to match the long sharp edge? It certainly looks to be a specialised design, for a particular job.
I thought about being broken then reshaped but the tip edge is the same amount of out of square as the handle. That seems purposefully done.
After exhausting my wikifu and googlefu, the closest I can find is it is some variation of a "Razel Knife", a form of chisel knife. The tip edge is useful for applying pressure to cut rather than slicing. Most I found have longer slimmer blades, rarely with the saw teeth. Some owners really like them, others don't like them. Seems to be a "love/hate" thing. I don't have a use for one myself, but it is an interesting style.
Wife has one almost like that. Uses it for spreading cream cheese on the counter bagel and cutting them up . Have no idea what it was made for. Had it in,1980 when we got married. Was old then
Where'd she get the thing ?? Looks like part chisel ,Wonder if it was a carpenters tool back in the day when they were driving pegs and dowels in timber framing . ??
She said she picked it up at a thrift store or garage sale because it was cheap and she could always use another putty knife.
It looks familiar, and definitely pre-internet. It's a putty knife no doubt. I remember all kinds of varieties, hell we still have 300 variations of putty knives.
Googling comes up with that CRKT Razel (razor/chizel) but I think that's probably a new idea instead of this old one. Most putty knives have some flexibility to them and are cheaper materials in my experience. My millwright fingers tell me this is very high quality old steel. More a surgical feel than old tool steel. Yeah, that sounds crazy...
