So I have a few guns that I am looking to change optics on and would be interested in some of the thoughts on here. There are 2 main things that are pushing my optic changes. First, I currently run a Vortex 3-9x on my AR10 (308) and find that once I get much past 100 yards I am having a hard time with it even on 9x magnification (probably these dang old eyes) So I would like to get something where I can be effective out to 300 or 400 yards. I am a fan of the Vortex and they do make a 4-16x that I have been looking pretty hard at. Also, not looking for something that cost more than the gun, this is for putting holes in paper and ringing steel targets. My second thought is I don't want to waste/sell the 3-9x so maybe move the 3-9x to my 223 that currently has a red dot that I absolutely hate, so I would like some thoughts and experience on this as I have never shot more that a 2x on a 223 before. Will 9x outdo the round? Lastly, I have a 300bo that has been waiting for optics I was thinking I might do a red dot/3x magnifier combo on. Looking for something that I can put on target quickly but also have the option to put some range on it if I need. This is on a 8 inch barrel. Extra double bonus points if I can co-witness some iron sights, but I am not against doing offset irons either. If it makes a difference, I am pending stamp approval for suppressors on the 308 and the 300bo. Not sure what effect that will have, these will be my first ones. What do ya'll think? -JW
I use a ziess 16x. It's expensive but I can see 6.5mm holes in white paper out to about 300yd and see 22 holes in paper easy at 200yd. Once you get much above 16x it just seems like magnifying mirage. I have a higher end 3x9 Leupold on my 30-30 it seems Iike I'm not missing much I can somewhat hit the targets at 300yd but by then I need a scope with moa graduations more than I need more the magnification. When I upgrade the scope on my 30-30 I would probably get a 12x with moa graduations. So you probably want at least a 12x on your 308. As for putting a scop on a 223 I stretch my AR15A2 clone out 300 to 360yd with the carrying handle sights. Yeah a I don't think a 9x scope is too much for a 223 all. Most 223 bullets drop less than 30-30 bullets of abnormally high ballistic coefficient bullets and I found the 9x on my 30-30 lacking. You will need to heavy the buffer in that 308 more than likely when you screw a can on it. The point of impact will change an moa or so when you put the can on.
I will never stop recommending SWFA to people. I love quality optics, but why spend thousands on a scope if you're gonna probably die in combat because we're not getting younger or better. Also, the SWFA scopes are rugged, reliable, and well tested. They work great. And if you're doubting the efficacy of these scopes, check into it for yourself. They're just amazing for the price. Also, if you wait for the annual sale around Christmas, you can save about $100...just FYI. SWFA has a great line of products but when they had an actual store front near me they were lackadaisical as hell in person if I had any questions. I think someone was hiring buddies and relatives that didn't much give a damn. Three visits and I was done with them.
Yeah, they source some of the best components but the cost of doing business this way means you aren't able to afford the most experienced and knowledgeable staff to sell your product at a storefront. The fact you can put an SWFA scope on any rifle including .50 cal and run it hard and it holds up is the major selling point. I won't tolerate rude or incompetent staff, either and cannot blame you.
The Primary Arms brand optics seem to be getting a positive reputation, they are licensing the ACSS Reticle to other optic manufacturers. Primary Arms Optics
Consider an LPVO. 1-6x or up to 1-10x. I have a Trijicon and love it. I'd definitely consider Primary Arms or Vortex as well on another.
Have a primary arms 1-4 LVPO on my 5.56 10.5" pistol, im half blind but can still shoot 2" groups on a bad day at 100 yards. Would be great on your blackout. As for the others i really like burris optics, just pick your flavor.
I also think you should check out Primary Arms. Great value for the money. I have a 4X-16X and no complaints. It is a bit heavy like all scopes of that magnification, perfect for setting up in a blind or hide, shooting from a bench position but I wouldn't think it would be something one would want for a fast-reacting AR. I got it with a quick release mount so I can put it on/off quickly without losing zero. It also has ACSS which I think is the best reticle ever made.
I did forget to mention I own a Vortex 4-16x44 Viper HST and it works great, but for the price I figured you might like other options. It does have good glass and the turrets track fine. Since you already own Vortex, you know it's not the best but for the money it's damn good. https://vortexoptics.com/vortex-viper-hs-t-4-16x44-riflescope+reticle-VMR-1~MRAD I'd get one if that's what you prefer, because I certainly can't complain about the one I own. I wouldn't pay MSRP though.
