After shtf and no electricity how will you defend your home after dark? It’s dark,no lights nowhere how will you be able to tell if someone is outside? What about solar yard lights? Night vision will work if you have enough batteries and can stay awake. Dogs might work for awhile until they are shot. You might have some yard lights tied into a main battery with the controls inside the home, that way you could lite different areas at will. Night time defense is my biggest worry.

Big dogs. Might get some attack goats.
I do have some nice little solar to battery powered motion lights.

Trip wires set as alarms,You can arm these with 170 db's flash bangs,Or live shotgun shells,After all it is shtf time,All bets are off !

I'm with Gator ,,, in SHTF scenario ,,, it's not about scaring them ,, it's about survival ,, and my survival is more important to me than their survival . We's playing for keeps now . Forgiving their trespasses doesn't count now .

As the Gman said above trip wires with 12ga flares and/or shot. IR beams that when broken trigger "something". If a towelhead in a 3rd world shithole can figure this out a dumbassed 'ol welder in Alabama surely can...

Any active duty/reserve folks out there?
Scrounge the grenade heads from the range. MANY times they are undamaged and just laying around on the grenade range. They can be reused as a trip wire type device by knocking out the primer and using a shotgun primer(#209 I think) to trigger "other things". The threads are 3/4 10 if I remember correctly...

Fence, dogs, and trip wires or pressure detonated flares. Then night vision etc, non lethal for now and "legal", but effective. Once TSHTF, same types of devices only lethal. Have tripped a couple of flares in the past and they really get your attention, even in daylight. Fence really helps for close in, have no good answer for a sniper type at distance, can look with thermal etc, but very hard to stop. Worse things I can think of are claymores and the German bouncing betty's and shu mines. All three make a mess out of your feet and legs even if you have vests.

And all three can be manufactured at home if/when needed..

So it's darker than the bottom of a mine, and you are going to set off munitions at targets you can't hardly see and that will light the place up? Guess whose night vision is about to pull a vanishing act.

IR WebCams... their Flash recover times are much better than human eyes.... and they are real good seeing small lights at distance...

All the camera's we have outdoors have IR. I still figure they will be "blinded" if a flare goes up?

Got caught out in the woods one dark and moonless rainy night when truck got stuck, was in an area I knew well, was 300 feet from a blacktop road, and I thought I would just walk out to the road and follow it about 600 feet to house. My eyes were fully acclimated to the dark when I admitted to myself that I was lost, leaned against a tree and waited for daylight. When it got light, I couldn't figure out where I was, followed a creek down hill and came out of the woods about 3/4 miles from house. Moral of the story, there are times when you can not see without night vision and you also have to be there to see any thing. I don't personally think you can maintain security of an area without some type of warning system. Bin Laudin had a beautiful compound with excellent walls and some sort of security, worked out well for him didn't it. High tech electronics, low tech dogs, trip wires, tin cans with pebbles, take what ever I can get. Man named Moseby in the war between the states kind of proved what can be done to mess things up and the resources it takes to try to stop some one who is determined and Grant at one point had 17,000 men guarding against Moseby who had about 500 and usually used 150 or so in a raid and Moseby captured one Union General in his bed surrounded by his men. Personally think that the weakest point in all of our plans is home security, if you aren't way out in the boonies, one man sniping or an attack by a larger force will defeat you.

Same problem, dark adaptation goes bye-bye when flashed.

My IR Webcams recover from bright Flashes in about 5 seconds... Tested during a lightning storm a few years back... that was directly overhead... and close to the ground...
