I was here in 1992 when it popped off last time, shoveling the ash off the roof wasn't needed as we borrowed a fire hose and, using the hydrant in our front yard (all with FD permission), was able to blast the inch or so of ash off the roof before it started to set like so much cement.
Spent two days at Elmendorf running a crew (all SNCO were assigned a 20+ person crew) shoveling and sweeping the ash to the verge of the runway, this so the vacuum truck could come in and do the finish work. Fire trucks washed the really fine stuff off.
The ash is some nasty shit that can ruin a IC engine in short order. It will kill a jet engine even faster

Day 4 after ashfall, the Alert birds retuned and were stood back up to full status. When it became obvious that we would get hit by Spurr ash, the entire alert team, aircraft and support staff, were flushed and sent to Fairbanks.
