Just finished reading Louis Lamour's The Last of the Breed and mention how survivalists can extract implied and explicit techniques and attitudes to survive dozens of life-threatening situations. Don't think Louis wrote it for that purpose but what a treasure house of eye-opening insights. If you are assigned guard duty, for example, don't sit facing the campfire. When searching for threats, let your peripheral vision be your first line of defense, then focus on whatever your peripheral vision notices. The list goes on!

Good read, hardly a survival manual.

Read it 50 years ago, and it was good, might be time to read it again.

Read it many years ago and loved it. Always looked for a followup, but he didn't write one. One of my all time favorite great writers. Take away on book wasn't as much about survival or prepping as never ever quit. Most of it was realistic.

Louis wrote a LOT of good stuff. Information for young men to be caring, strong, proactive MEN. La Amore’s works should be required reading for all young men, right behind the Bible. Other great historic writers also.

He led a pretty epic life himself. I think I've read pretty much everything he ever wrote. I recently started rereading the Sackett saga to help me tune out some of the crazy. I find his writing a comfort these days.

Thanks for suggesting “Last of the Breed”. I picked it up a couple weeks ago. It was nice to pick up a real book, it’s been a while. Great story!
