Florida is being hit with our first Tropical Storm/Hurricane of the 2024 be season. We here in Tallahassee were initially expecting a direct punch in the face as it was predicted to come ashore twenty miles south in St. Marks. Luckily a last-minute swing eastwards had it come ashore in poor much-hit Steinhatchee to our east. Winds and rain were thus much less than what we expected. Power was out all over Tally, mine dropping at 8:30AM, but Tallahassee Arc&Spark had me back up at about 10:15AM! Cool! Being a good old Native Floridian, I was prepared. Plenty of food and water, charger bricks to keep my phones going, and talking with my buddies. Our Snail Mail even delivered this afternoon! So we dodged a potentially big bullet. Jacksonville and South Georgia are getting drenched now. This could have been a survival situation for those not prepared.
I'm so glad that you were prepared. It's hard to believe that hurricane season is already here. Stay safe!
Here in Coastal SC we are getting huge amounts of rain the winds are down to 45 it's moving very slow may get 12-20 inches of rain. So far have not lost power -got plenty of gas for generator. Debby is off shore supposed to cut back onshore just north of us. Supposed to drive to my sons in Gulf breeze FL last Saturday maybe get out of here Friday morning or Saturday will depend on road conditions --flooding
These early 'canes usually go over to Texas and Mexico, and later in the season they tend to go up the East Coast. But once in awhile, they decide North Florida needs some love too.
As usual the media made a big deal about Debby. --so far we got 6.5 inches of rain per my rain gauge.-the ground has been dry so a lot soaked in. Wind wise we had nothing we have had worse thunder storms. Think we will head to the boys in Gulf Breeze Fl Friday morning. I'll be checking with the highway patrol se how road conditions are on I-26 and 1-95 any road flooding.
I-95 was flooded around Ridgeland and I-26 closed somewhere down towards Charleston. It is coming back ashore tonight and has strengthened a bit, time for my AO to get hammered. 4.5" of rain today, 5-10 more expected.
We are supposed to head out (Friday) to my sons in Gulf Breeze Fl usually go Hwy 17 from Charleston to I-95 figured there would be flooding probable go I-26 to I-95 . What's a good web site for road conditions. We got 7+" of rain here in Mcclellanville
We had more than an hour with no rain at all here in Jacksonville. (No not THAT one.) It's started again and several North Carolina coastal counties are already starting to see some flooding. Water moves out to the ocean fast enough from here that we just sit and watch it roar past. Makes for some interesting kayaking in little tiny creeks that are usually just a trickle. There's one that drains into the Intracoastal Waterway that is so narrow that I end up pulling myself upstream with my paddle on the banks, but it's deep enough to shoot me back down stream with just a little steering. It's going to be wet here through at least tonight. (Thursday, August 8) Not sure if I should silence my phone. Tornado and flood warnings keep waking me up. I am where I'm going to be if one hits. If I end up like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, so be it.
North Florida is back to hot&dry after the storm passed. I figure it dragged all the spotty rain clouds that plagued us through July along with it. In another day or two though, we'll be back to our dampish summer with scattered rain.
Yeah, it will be crossing over me tomorrow dumping rain until about 3 or 4 in the afternoon. The nice thing is we will subsequently have 3 or 4 days of good, clear and not so hot weather.
Sun is out at 1900, all but finished in Myrtle. Now we are getting ready for the river flooding in a few days when the NC rain gets here. We dodged a bullet because the storm came in farther south than originally anticipated and saved us from a bunch of the rain. Still a lot of flooding inland.
We got a bunch of water in central NC ,, flooded creeks ,, farther east , I seen the news reported a bunch of tornado damage,, flooding , and a few deaths ,, stay safe folks .
