Electric actuator failing...

My snowplow for the UTV is failing. The electric actuator that raises and lowers the plow will not hold it up. It raises and lowers but will not hold the plow up, it just falls. I was stunned to look at the cost of these things, ranging from $1070-$1140. No rebuild kit available. No direct replacement available. I'm screwed so... I'm going to tear it apart and see what is wrong as I have nothing to lose at this point.

So, I thought first I would ask if anyone has any advice for me. I've never played around with these things before, so any recommendations, advice, or comments are appreciated.

    It's on a Kubota V5008 plow, is a Warner electric actuator, p/n# K2XG10-12V-04R90CT

do you have a winch on it? i put a 5' grader blade on my atv plow and use the winch to lift it,,,,, a cheap winch is about 250.
could be low voltage, drop valve stuck open, bad drop relay.
should be a adjust for drop speed,,, maybe. id use a winch.

Odd...it's just a screw drive (according to the part number you have listed.) IIRC you can tighten the free play so it doesn't spool back down under load...heck, I might have a similar one sitting in my goodies bin. Going to check when I get home tonight.

Can you take some photos of this thingy and how the thingy works, might have a few ideas for how to fix it, or adapt to something else that might be better, easier to service/repair/replace!

I have always seen them ran with a winch.

Yes! It is ~12 inch, (attachment hole-to-hole) with a 4-inch stroke when fully extended, so 16-inches when extended.

"IIRC you can tighten the free play so it doesn't spool back down under load."
There doesn't appear to be any place to adjust it, at least, externally. There is an allen/hex on the motor but I think that is what is used for something in the motor, it's direct center of the motor. I did try turning it a bit without any effect, turned it back. Let me know if you see anything on how I can adjust it because at this point it is almost unusable anyway so might as well try it. What about that huge nut at the top that appears to connect the piston to the assembly?

I did some research and made some called and it is made by Thomson Industries now which can't sell me one since it is proprietary but $1070 is insane.

Here is a photo, notice the brass colored allen screw in the center of the motor. I found one on Amazon, same piston length, 4-inch, but the overall length is 1.8 inches longer but I think it will work, $332, of course it's Chinese made.

I got this when I purchased the XG850 Kubota UTV. It is a V5008 plow by Kubota and uses this actuator in place of winch. Works well when it works. What is shocking is I don't think the plow has that much time on it. I mean, the UTV had only 600 miles and he bought the plow when he bought the UTV, both new and this is my first season with it so...

Amazon or Grainger would likely be the best source, some times eBay as well!

I will look at Grainger. The one I purchase on Amazon is made by Progressive Automations. Google says it is located in Ohio and British Columbia but, I would bet, it's made in China. It's due here next Thursday. I'm hoping it works, if so then I will tear the other one apart and see what happened. I am hoping @techsar is correct and it can be adjusted. It would seem to me there is a rachet type mechanism that should lock the gear in place so cannot fall, in which case there should be some sort of electric solenoid/switch that moves it in and out.

    .. .. yep yep .. ..

my guess is it may contain pieces parts from Canada, India, chin_ , pakistan, vietnam, The Philippines, and oder countries

if it is made in Canada from mostly Canadian parts it might be gud [winkthumb]

if it is assembled in Canada from mostly foreign parts it aint gonna be dat gud, might last ya 6 ta 12 months or 1 ta 2 years

.. .. da engineering folks at dat company all seem to be from Asia fer sure .. ..

Yeah, that looks like a housing, so the Allen screws are for that most likely.

You could take it all apart and remove the piston. If it's fluid filled, I mean can it be much different from a motorcycle fork? You could rebuild that thing, make it better, stronger, faster....

It's a Basic Linier Actuator, should be super easy to find a replacement! I deal with the Hydraulic versions of these, basically remove the electric motor and replace it with a Hydro one, same same!

Yes, you would think so but the size makes it a weirdo. It was made specifically for Kubota, the manufacturer told me this, and apparently, it's about 1.8 inches shorter than a normal 4-inch stroke. This makes finding a direct replacement damn near impossible, I wonder if Kubota knew this. Well, so far it has been impossible because the one I found is a bit longer, but I think I can make it work... Looking at Sec's photo, I wonder if limit switches have gone out because it makes noise when it reaches the top or bottom...but strange they both would go out. Where would I source something like a limit switch?

@sec_monkey Hey! That's great photo of one. I will keep it for reference. Thanks!
