To any who served over there or anyone with knowledge... I always see pics of the Taliban where at least 1 person in a group has an ancient RPG and no packs with reloads. Were those strictly for show? Did they actually work? Do they just carry them when a TV camera is around? Did you see them much in real life? Did they even know how to use or maintain them? Most look like they'll kill the operator. I am just curious because in just about every picture and video on the news media of the Taliban shows an RPG, and just the bearing of the many carriers, they don't look like they know what they are doing. ETA: I know on rare occasions they have shot down choppers, but I am guessing they used something a little more sophisticated than what they show in the pictures, or they got extremely lucky.
I suspect that they are mostly OLD STOCK exRussian stuff, and mostly for show… but never having served, I really do not know, and I do not have any current contacts with my SEAL Buddies from a decade ago, so I can’t ask…
Wouldn't pay for me to have RPG's, Those people texting and driving would end up with the butt-end of their car shot off.
Are they real? More than likely. Are they setup correctly? Are they sighted in for the goat fker using it, probably not as it seems like it could cause a hell of a flinch and would take a fair bit of training to be able to hit something. Do they know how to use them beyond "point it that way and shoot"? Debatable.
Do they use them. Yes. Taliban RPG Hits in Front of Convoy plenty of vids on line. do they actually hit anything? - Occasionally. If you happen to be the occasion, well, that just sucks...

One of my old marine rifleman neighbors was telling me he shot men, women and children and would do it again if he had too. Said the Vietcong would give a kid kid a live hand-grenade and send them into a group of GI's to blow them up.
A buddy of mine ,, passed away earlier this year,, he was a Marine Vietnam vet,, had seen a kid kill some guys over there in the same way. He told me of a couple of kids he killed that were acting a little strange once,, was thinking they were going to do the same thing. He said he shot and killed them ,, then found out they weren't armed ,, that bothered him pretty bad .
Yes, they are real, there is no reason to carry fakes when the damn things are literally everywhere, same with the Ak's and other nasty toys, you can literally walk into the local markets and walk out with pretty much anything you want for a few dollars equivalent! We would see kids and young adults walking around with hot weapons all the time, patrols of militia that couldn't have been older then 15, and they all seemed to have at least 1 RPG in the group! Now, the big stuff, those were "Owned" by what ever tribe was in the area, and they would hide that shit all over and then roll it out when needed, use it, and then hide it again! If you ever saw images or video of one of those, especially a dismounted one ( Not installed in a Technical/IWV) You needed to really be worried, they could set those up pretty much anywhere and that was super dangerous, A Roof top DShK was not a good thing to fly into! We spent a lot of time flying night patrols, and would see mule trains coming in through the mountains with all sorts of weapons and ammunition, some pretty scary stuff, and we would usually call an Apache strike on them when ever we could, or some times an AC-130 if there were potentially more then one mule train to cover! Next day the Army would send it's intel teams to check things out, you wouldn't believe the shit the Taliban would haul in and then distribute! Those Rat Lines are why we are still in country, if you cannot shut those down, especially at the supply source, your fucked!
