This is a brilliant, practical, basic cream soup recipe and she talks about how to use this basic Cream Soup Recipe and make 7-10 different meals with this as a base. All made from dried canned goods Cream Soup for 7 pints - Each pint is 4 cups of soup 2 cups Milk Powder 1 ½ cup Corn Starch ½ cup chicken bouillon (Dry) 4 Tablespoons of dehydrated onion 2 teaspoons Basil 2 Teaspoons Sage or thyme (Not both) 1 Teaspoon black pepper Mix this all up real good. Put 2/3 cup mixture in a pint jar Add any kind of veggies to this except dehydrated peas Add 2 pints of water Cook on low
Same woman and she makes breakfast sausage from her prepss from Dried oatmeal using a WWII recipe Recipe: (Mine is different) 1 cup of Oatmeal 5 tablespoon of dry egg powder reconstituted with 5 tablespoons of water 1 & 1/2 teaspoons of ground sage 1 & 1/2 heaping teaspoons of fennel 1/2 teaspoon ground rosemary 3/4 teaspoon parsley 1/2 heaping spoon of onion powder 1/2 teaspoon of celery salt 1/4 teaspoon celery seed 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1 heaping teaspoon garlic minced or powder (we like garlic) 2-3 cups simmering beef stock (I made mine from bouillon) Mix all the ingredients up. Form into patties Easy fry in a ppan with a little oil (Just to tinge them a bit brown) Add the beef broth. Get it to boil and then turn it down to simmer a full 20 minutes Pour off broth Add oil to the pan and refry the patties til they are a nice color Thats it.
I love this meal in a jar concept. It is great, compact and simple. The only issue I see is that if any of the ingredients are oil based, it will shorten the shelf-life and things will become rancid quicker. But I like combining dried items in a jar then I attach a baggie of flavoring to the jar. I think with the oatmeal recipe, one could substitute quinoa and it would taste fine. Nice recipe.
For me its another creative method of preserving food. Because she vacuum packs dried ingredients she can get away with using oil and corn starch (you can substitute other thickening agents as well) but if you are going to can you need to use a modified starch for stability in the canning process.
