I could do this since I was a kid, Dad would take us to the desert to shoot and we would wander around each of us had a different gun and by the report we knew who was where. At a range I would listen down the line and know each weapon being fired. That was long ago. Now days not so much.
Yes sir ,, did same thing back in the day ,, out squirrel hunting with a couple buddies ,, we always had a bet going ,, 5 bucks per squirrel,, if one of them got 2 more than me ,, then i owed him 10 bucks ,, when the shot rang out ,, I knew which buddy it was .

Yes, differentiating rifle reports is useful, but more so the distance to the firer's location, which may aid the identification of a sniper's firing position. Crack-thump distance estimation is a useful tool for the counter sniper. Got plenty of practice at range butts details in hearing crack-thump reports similar to being fired upon.
