The best kerosene light ever made was the Aladdin type but it is expensive and finnicky. The most common type, straight wick and bowl works well but doesn't give out a lot of light, the best and easiest to use was the circular wick with a draft coming up thru the bowl and thru the center of the wick. Hard to find new ones, Standard Oil in 1880's or so made sure that they were available in order to sell more kerosene.. Extra-Bright Brass Oil Lamps The one I have I picked up at an antique shop cheap as a reject, had to replace the burner, etc, but it sure throws out light. I have to admit that in the last couple of outages I have just used a LED lantern with 3 levels of light and rechargeable and due to safety concerns and just ease of use, it would have to be a long term event before I broke out my lamps and lamp oil.
I lived with these for years , it's a relationship with each lamp , I have 4 here , 1 hanging 2 table type and a wall mount. all fueled with non smelling oils. The oils are refreshed each year. Sloth
My long term lamp of choice inside the house would be the Coleman Kero-Lite, but like the Amish I've been spoiled by the ease of flipping a switch and having wonderful white light or cooking flame from propane appliances. I use them knowing my fuel supplies for them are limited and they're a luxury. I have a love/hate relationship with Aladdin mantle lamps, and prefer just about anything else.
Just had a bad thunderstorm roll thru,, knocked out power for about 5 minutes,, under tornado warnings for the little while. Had the closest lightning stike ive had in quite a while , flash of light and the crack if the strike was simultaneous,,, and loud.. calm as spring day right now. Stay safe all.
Update on my storm,, tornado hit less than 10 miles as the crow flies ,, ripped a house or 2 from their foundations, or off of their pylons,, its a beach area. Anyway, just got word from a Pa buddy,, said hes fine but one of our Mn buddies is hitting 40 below temps ,,, if thats true,, seems kind of odd having a 80-90 degree temp change in this short of distance. Good day all.
