Beware of Aguila Ammo

Hi guys. This is my short review of Aguila ammo made in Mexico. I posted this video a few hours ago and have gotten dozens of people telling me they have had the same problems. It's cheap but you get what you pay for. In my case it blew up in my face and destroyed my magazine.

First, that really blows. Second, I think Aguila is pretty good overall and follows the same strict guidelines as most manufacturers, since I've had no problems (but I only own some 9mm and .22 ammo in this brand) - And third, you know what I'm about to say, right?

That round probably detonated not because of faulty manufacturing, but because the tolerances in the breech combined with the powder burn rate resulted in a 'kaboom'. 7.62x51 and .308 are pretty much identical...but they're also not. You all know about the headspacing, you all know about the case internal dimensions. A person can run a civilian load in a military weapon of the same caliber, but the other way around may or may not always work, even though the .308 civilian round is capable of much higher pressures. This is due to variations in rifle design, having a breech and bore just beyond the threshold could result in problems (it's all about tolerances). I do not need to explain this, but suffice to say the .MIL spec brass is thicker walled with the same external dimensions besides the case head. To those of us who reload, this means less powder can fit inside the case of the .Mil brass, and this leads us into headspace and the load data. And sure, 99.99999 percent of the time, everything is just fine...until it's not.

Now, if you really didn't know about the difference between a military load 7.62x51 and the venerable .308 (my most favorite caliber in the whole wide world), please check into it. I've tagged this thread to link with the older threads on the same subject.

Hmm, never had a problem with that brand but then again never shot a lot of it. As I was searching for some 9-mil stuff last week I was finding that Federal American Eagle and several other well known brands are actually cheaper than Aguila.

Picking up ammo now as it is fairly plentiful and prices are starting to edge toward the reasonable mark. In three to six months that may not be the case (so to speak).

We should all have learned the lessons of impromptu ammo shortages by now. One day the shelves are full and a week or two later you can't find the stuff at any price, and it stays that way for two or three years at a time.

The .308Win vs. 7.62X51 thing is the other way round..... NEVER use the .308Win in a military rifle. I tried it with my CETME rifle, big mistake. Had two ripped cases. .308Win cases are too thin, in addition to the chamber dimension issues.
I also tried using surplus 5.56X45 in a .223Rem chambered Contender pistol. Locked it up tight twice, requiring disassembly to remove the offending military case. Fortunately no damage to the guns in either situation.

I'd like to see a crystal clear close up of that split case so we could see if there was a case wall variance. Pausing the video i just couldn't see the wall, base or case head to look at disruption or failure mode.

Only ever used it in .22lr... Thousands of them. Had fewer problems than with Federal, way better than Remington ammo. Mater of fact I can't remember any FTF and maybe one or two FTE's. Can have that many from a 50 box of Remington/Peter's brand. Any larger caliber I just reload, preferably LC, Lapua, Federal and Winchester in that order. Really liked the mil 45ACP brass with the 1942 dated head stamp. They just feel different..... I think I'm a brass snob... YMMV

I've only ever bought their primers, 22 and 9mm ammo. Only bought their 9mm ammo once.
I've reloaded a crap load of their 9mm and 38spl brass and probably some of their 223 brass.

My only experience with Aguila ammo has been their .22 rimfire - .22 Colibri & Super Colibri, .22 SSS heavy bullet subsonic and .22 Maxximum. All are good for their intended purpose, bring quite specialised. Never had a failure with them.

Could the rifle have fired out of battery? Looks like the case was unsupported when fired.

I'm thinking with how smooth that flame cut through the case head is, your bolt and receiver now has been flame sprayed brass everywhere in there.

Case diameter still with in spec or is bulging near the case head?

Either way. Holy Wah that was a spicy trigger pull.
