I got a coyote hanging around my house. I think he is after my cats and while I have given considerable thought to allowing him to eat the good-for-nothing felines, I fear the repercussions of my better half - meaning - I think she would rather feed me to the coyote than the cats so...

I have only 3 calibers: .22, 9mm and 5.56. I fear the .22 wouldn't kill him unless I got a perfect hit and the 5.56, even using M193, would over penetrate, basically icepick him, not good considering there is some houses around as I like to be as safe as possible. I have plenty of really good self-defense hollow points for 9mm but hitting a fast-moving coyote at 75+ feet with a pistol...dicey.

Has anyone used the 5.56 hollow points for hunting? Any recommendations? Hell, I didn't know they even produced a 5.56 hollow point until an hour ago...

just be careful about using that hollow point rifle ammo for normal times defense >> it's a crossover thing from the Geneva military type thinking - DAs use that kind of thing as "excessive cruelty" for screwing you in court ....

strangely - most times civilians don't hear about the hollow point for handguns - but cops most certainly will .....

I'd look into a hollow pt for that .22 - if its long rifle there's ammo around - it'd do a job on a coyote .....

    At 75 ft, perhaps a 9mm carbine might be in order...plus they're fun ;)

The polymer tip bullets are great. I usually buy bulk from a local shop and reload but also use Fiocchi V-Max and other brands. Perfect for varmint hunting.

Hornady Varminators are the gold standard amongst varmint wackers, I use them constantly from everything from squeaky pigs, to big damn Yodel Dawgs, drops them instantly and humanly.

You don't want to handle dispossessing of the coyote, Gut shoot the bastard and let him run off and die a mile away!
    I hope this helps?

All I can tell you is that a .22LR round nose lead kills a coyote when ya punch a lung and it heads towards his ass end. Not quickly but if you head off in the direction he headed the next day.. ya will find him about a quarter mile away.
9mm ball also works. Ditto for 223 ball or OTM but they work way faster that the 22lr or 9mm.
choot 'em with what ya got.

Unless you speak his language you're not going to get a close shot anyway. I like the .22 option.
In my experience, no neighbor will get up off their sofa to check on the report of a single rimfire round.

It's a shame you forgot to put that fryer in the freezer when you got home from the grocery.

Just be sure of your range and what's behind the bait and dispatch the coyote. Same vitals as a deer. Shot right behind the shoulder. No exit. I'm thinking 360 loop and DRT.

Just pick one and get a pill in him. 5.56 hollowpoints are used everyday to kill yotes.

If I were worried about close neighbors, I'd use an air rifle. But that's just me. I have a Gamo pellet rifle, and their product line is pretty formidable. They make some great high velocity pellet rifles now for very little money. You can "size up" and get into some very spendy air rifles, some of which are damn impressive. The ammo is very affordable, and air rifles are much quieter. Best of all, you can legally buy a silencing device (called a 'moderator' for air rifles) without ATF and FBI fingerprinting nonsense. Also, air rifles aren't considered firearms.

But are they as manly as a firearm? I'll leave you to decide that one.

Reference the DA's and court... Yeah, that is good advice. I took a course a couple of years back and the guy teaching it was an expert that went all over the country testifying for defense cases concerning firearms. He said the same thing about one's firearms, be aware if you modify it that a DA could try to use that fact against you. He was okay using hollow points in a pistol for self-defense as obviously it helps against over penetration, in fact he recommended them, but I could imagine if some Commie-Leftist DA found out you were using some hollow points that are outlawed by the Hague Convention in some horrible military rifle to defend yourself. He could play that as you being an overzealous killer. Yeah, that's good advice.

I do have .22 hollow points that I use in my .22 LR for prairie dogs. I think the ammo is made by CCI. @hot diggity and you both think the .22 LR would do the job so... My Ruger 10/22 is pretty accurate now after I had to redo a lot of things to make it so. I was simply worried it didn't have the stopping power.

I like how you think! :D Definitely justification for a Springfield Kuna! YES!

Well, I will definitely get a box of these polymer 5.56 just to have around for a rainy day. I will get a box tomorrow as wife has me cornered today assisting in the garden, no getting out of it. Should he come around in the meantime, I will try a shot with the .22 LR hollow point. Thanks all!

I have a Rem. 700 SPS varminter in 223 with a 1/14 inch twist. The Hornady 40gr. V-max bullets with 22 gr. of H-Benchmark and LC cases shoots 5-shot one hole groups at 100 yards with the cheap plastic stock. Remington also offers this same rifle with a 1/8 twist for around $649. Which I will probably buy for the Mk 262 clone loads I have developed with 22.9gr. of AR Comp powder.

22lr works. Nearly every coyote I've killed was with a 22lr pistol.
The closest shot I've ever had on a coyote I could have killed it with a hammer. Damn near burned a gemtech logo into the top of its head.
