Before. One Q-tip and two squirts of Lime-A-Way liquid toilet bowl cleaner did the job. I taped off what I wanted to save with clear plastic packing tape and rubbed the areas I wanted to remove with Lime-A-Way until I couldn't feel any roughness through the Q-tip. Rinsed, dried, installed.

Little bedside wick lamp like many I found at my Great Aunt's cottage. Before electricity, this was how you saw to get into bed. Note wall hanger with stop to prevent striking chimney. My phone makes more light, but these still work after 100 years. Plume & Atwood Mfg Co Acorn

As an added bonus, the little bedside lamps are self extinguishing. They will likely make a kerosene spill if tipped over, but not a flaming one. Yes, that's smoke rising from the burner.
