On the well bucket, they are pretty easy to make, just get a chunk of PVC in a size that will go down the well along side the plumbing and put a check vualve on the bottom end that lets the water flow up but not down then use some 1/4" cable and clamps tp put a bail on it and your good to go. Just make sure its to big to go past the pump or put a cone shaped filter on top so you dont get hung up on the pump at the bottom of the well.

My stuff lately has been 1 step forward and 2 steps back trying to get funding set up for school since basicly 3 large chunks of funding I thought were done deals and locked down fell through. I did however build a duty holster with retention strap for my Berretta 92 FS and also a double mag pouch for them. They actualy came out pretty good and compareing them to stuff I found in a catalog looks like I saved about $150 or better as opposed to buying them at retail for comperable leather and they fit me as a lefty.

How did you come up with your pattern? I've got a Sig P232 that I want to make a holster for. Want it to be a pancake, I am planning on using, as a pattern, a holster for a PPK. Close as the two pistols are the P232 will not fit the PPK holster. What type of leather do you use and where do you buy it?

Well I basicly just looked at some of the holsters in a catalog to figure out the features. The first thing I do when I start to make a holster is to form the leather around the gun and then generaly sew on the means that hold that part to you. This is actualy the first holster I have made that has a retention strap or was for anything other than concealed carry. All the rest I have made were mostly IWB holsters and ALL of them were made so you could turn the holster upside down and shake it and the gun wouldnt fall out (well except for the pocket holster I made for my Kel-tec). I buy the remnents and such from an Amish saddle and harness shop and just pick which ever weight leather seems like it would do best for THAT holster.

The easiest way to make sure it fits the gun is have the leather bigger than the gun, oil the gun REAL heavey (can even coat it in vasoline or wrap a plastic bag around it but if its wrapped you wont get as perfect of fit) then dip the leather in warm/hot water for a couple minutes and towle it dry then fold it over the gun and use a wooden spoon or some such to rub the leather down onto the gun and shape the leather to the shape of the gun. Sew where the 2 sides come together then trim. Thats the readers digest version anyhow.

Thank you all for providing the incentive to get off my butt and get started stocking up. After work today, I picked up 25# each of salt, sugar, all-purpose flour, bread flour, rice, and pinto beans. A large bottle of multi-vitamins, and boxes of anti-diarheal tabs and allergy tabs for the start of the pharmacy. It's a start...

Thanks monkeyman, I have some leather but most of it is not what I'd call tooling leather. I've one piece large enough to do one holster. The rest of my leather is deer and elk hide. More suited for clothing or moccasins maybe a possibles bag.

I've looked online at Tandy's, they seem high. Don't know of any Amish shops around close to ask about leather. There is a leather shop that specializes in biker stuff, I've bought a few belts off them, might try there.

Need to add leather to the list of things to stock up on.

If you tan you canalso tan leather more apropriate for such stuff. Basicly the stuff for clothing is generaly more like buckskin where its had all the other layers removed. For leather to use for other stuff you basicly just flesh it, sli the hair and dont remove anything else then tann it out and you have a lot heavier and more durable material but its near impossible to have it as soft and pliable as the buckskined stuff for clothing.

Here's an emergency water idea, make a rain barrel. It's pretty simple. You need some sort of barrel or even a garbage can. Get some wire mesh for a rough filter (door/window screens work well), tie it around the top, and stick it under your gutter downspout. If you want to get fancy, you can drill a hole and attach a spout at the bottom. People will debate whether it is safe to drink rain water. In an emergency, I would boil it and if there were still concerns use some purification tabs.

Here are a few examples and instructions on how to make your own:

Hello fellow survivalists. I really like your forum! Just spent 2 weeks reading most of the threads here including this one (from start to finish = over 2 years of posts!). Its not that I’m a slow reader, but there is so much info (I take notes) and so many links to read that it’s a bit overwhelming. Now I’m kicking in high gear trying to catch up with many of you. I’ve been in a novice survival mode for over 2 years now, so I’m not starting from scratch. But there is sooooo much I haven’t considered or planned that I feel like I’m starting from scratch all over again.

Based on recommendations, over the past 2 weeks I’ve picked-up:
Books (I read a lot, and will keep these for reference):
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[IMG]The Encyclopedia of Country Living – Carla Emery
Preparedness Course – Jim Rawles & Jake Stafford
Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse – Jim Rawles

The Self-Sufficient Life & How to Live it – John Seymour

Defense (have most of the bases already covered)
150 rds. .45ACP
220 rds. 5.56mm
120 rds .223

Other
Sunlinq 25w Solar Panel (solar is important, IMO)
2 Eton crank radios
Sterno
Garden in a Can
Crops in a Can
2 Super Siphons
2 brake muzzles and a sling from Kel-Tec
100’ parachute chord
Buck Vanguard 692
2 Leatherman multi-tools
Assorted medicines and bandages

More than anything I really need to work on food. Last night I decided to convert my office into a pantry. This room is really a tornado/bomb shelter that the previous owners added-on to the house underground. All walls, floor & ceiling are thick cement with an air vent out one side of the house (probably built during the cold war). It’s big enough to fit 5 – 4’L x 2’W x 6’H shelves. Food was starting to bust-out of closet storage. I’m gonna need to move a sh!t load of books and crap out to the attic, seal & repaint, and throw in some new carpet.

Sorry if this post is long – will try to keep shorter in the future - just getting my feet wet with you guys. Thanks for all your fine posts and ideas.

For $5.49 + tax I got one flash light, one trout line, a knife and a belt.

The flash light is clean inside. The trout line long {It is 200” long with 50 swivels and 20” of free line on each end.}
, clean and in very good shape. The knife is sharp, flexible and blade rings like a bell when you tap it. I think it was broke out of a saw blade. I took belt apart and ended up with 13 yards of candle wick and two D rings. Not bad for the money.

This place is pretty decent for leather.

Alternatively, you can also call them: "When you give us a call at 888 Hide-Tan (888 443-3826) and tell us what you need we will use that experience to select the best possible hides for your project."
