The handle is Mesquite wood from a tree in Oliver Lovings front yard (he is the one that did the first old west cattle drives). The tree was alive in 1877 when the Southwest cattle rangers were formed in his yard. Part of the steel is from an old cowboy line camp on the King ranch. The handle design is the orginial coffin handle shape taken from James Blacks bowie knives (he made one for bowie referred to as Bowie #1). I just reduced it in size to fit this knife. The small ferrule behind the guard has 1877 layers of damascus to recognize their birth yesr.
Damned nice work , and talent . I believe I'd just have to use that as a steak knife at the kitchen table,, to nice to put to work and f'k it up .
Thank you for sharing this work of art with us. Beautiful and still functional and all the history woven in.
