I saved 6 cases of MRE’s from the garbage can, something about them being expired. Is there any problem saving and or eating them down the road? Obviously in an emergency I’m feasting, taking my chances. Thanks.
Keep them in a cool dark storage. When opening one, pay attention to delamination of the sealed pouches, odd smells, texture or appearance, and taste just a tiny bit. If you feel a tingling or numbness, discard it. There are MRE Review channels on Youtube that can show you how the "pros" do it.
MREs shelf life is dependent on storage temps. Trash can pull from Anchorage AK - might be OK. Trash can pull from Tucson Az in AUG? Maybe save for 'trading';.
If they aren't too far out of expiration now, you can freeze them immediately and they will last much longer.
When I buy MRE items, I get the packs of all mains, or all bread items, or all pizza, etc. Don't need all the miscellaneous stuff they add into the full MRE. Just more junk to throw away. Got my own spoon/spork, salt/pepper/coffee, etc. Reduces the cost and bulk a bit that way.
Pretty much the same with any canned food. They are probably still good, maybe a little "less nutritious", but still edible. Trust your nose and taste when opening. I've had canned food that was a year past expiration, no issues. It's not like the day after the expiration date the food magically goes bad.
