saw this yesterday anyone tried one out??? AR57 16" Complete ULT M-LOK Upper Receiver 5.7x28 Caliber With BCG, Muzzle Brake, M-LOK Rails and 1-50 Round Mag, Drop In Ready
I don't think 5.7 really belongs in an AR platform. Imo the main reasons you want a 5.7 upper: You want a dedicated varmint busting AR and you hand load. You want an AR with reliable 50 round mag. You want to collect all your brass without a brass goat for reasons. The biggest reason to go with a 5.7 rifle these days: You reload and are using 5.7 to save powder. The hottest 5.7 load I've seen is about 8gr of powder, that's about 1/3 of a typical 223 or 5.56 load that will cycle a normal AR. Or about half the powder of my most accurate 223 bolt rifle load.
I've heard of the FN 5.7 pistol but never heard of using that caliber in a rifle. I suppose you could, some use the 9mm in a carbine. Supposedly, the FN 5.7 will penetrate soft body armor but I've no idea what type or round or how it is loaded or etc. I do know the 5.7 ammo is very pricey.
Seen one 6 months or so ago, It's said to be a very zippy round. Like OP4 stated it would be a very good varmint round, Other than that Good Luck with it.
It's a good varmint, pdw round. To me 5.7 is best in a 50 round mag in a light gun with a barrel length around 8 to 10 inches in a shoulder fired gun that has an OAL more than that of a pistol but less than the width your shoulders, folders that can act like a both a pistol and rifle are bonus. I wouldn't pick something like 5.7x28 or 4.6x30 in a pistol, pdw or rifle to hunt down dangerous bad guys with, try to go into battle with it, go on a patrol like in Iraq back in say 2007, do gate guard duty with. It's a round for a small light gun you can lay down lots of fire with till you can either get away or fall back and get ahold of a bigger gun or call in the trained shooters. The pdw is ideal where a full size gun would slow you down too much, you're doing other work that normal doesn't require use of a gun, you need to to conceal it, use as a replacement for a pistol that packs a lot more fire power and makes hits further, out to say 100yd plus. Also 5.7 rifles are excellent at splattering varmints out to maybe 200yd burning up pistol amounts of powder. I need to take my P50 SBR to the range and let some fly out to at least 100yd.
Face it, not everyone needs a squad automatic weapon and full armory (though VERY nice to have.). For the average Joe/Jane most are not 500+ yard shooters. This august group of preppers certainly can use the long range stuff. However, many of us have one or two long range shooter platforms and everything else is somewhat "lesser" in range and capability. As I age on the "right side of the sod" I find many of my older friends are giving up shooting or scaling back. Why? They have "too much gun" for their abilities to deal with the recoil now. As their vision and muscular skills start to atrophy past age 60 (your mileage may vary) they no longer enjoy the heavy thump of a .50 or even 12 ga against the shoulder. What I'm saying is many shooters assume they will always be able to continue with their "plan" of full battle rattle forever. The reality is you end up having to make reasonable choices. When you are no longer able to handle a bear load .357 you choose a more suitable pistol. Perhaps if you want a side arm that uses the same cartridge you might select a 5.7x28, esp now that prices have come down, and it is more widely available. I know I've looked at them but not purchased anything. However, my wife is very recoil sensitive and rarely shoots anything bigger than a .380. I've purchased a 9mm PCC for her since it has almost no recoil, and I could see both of us switching to 5.7 in another few years. Your mileage may vary on this, and certainly not everyone ages at the same rate. We are fairly healthy, but I know that as my testosterone levels drop towards zero, I'm not as strong as I once was, nor able to shoot the big guns as well as I once could. (Even if I was just a legend in my own mind! LOL!)
My long range gun is a 6.5mmanbun with a big silencer, very shotable now I can easily shoot it all day. Can't even do that with a Sporter 308. Main problem with a 9mm ppc is it will shoot like a 22lr. I'll have to look up the trajectory of 5.7 it will be a lot better than 22lr and 9mm as both of those are firing about 0.12 ballistic coefficient bullets at around 1,200fps where a 5.7 is more like a 0.25 bc bullet at more like 2,000fps. I got a small 9mm pistol from someone who got rid of it because they said it was getting too difficult to rack the slide and the recoil was hurting them. I developed a 100gr mild load for my wife as 115gr range ammo makes that gun pretty snappy. My 357mag loads are hot 125gr 38spl+p, very shotable, shoot a 100, 200 of them at one range visit easy. Figure those should be relevant for as long as I am.
