Buddy bought a brand new Freightliner Semi truck, an Absolutely Gorgeous Classic XL that he ordered and then waited almost a year for them to build it! It showed up at the FACTORY owned Dealer in Portland for him to take delivery. He finishes all the paperwork and goes to fire it up and head out, the engine fires up and is smoking out the exhaust and making a gawd awful racket, he shuts it down and goes into the dealer to complain, the shop forman comes out and cranks it up and you could see on his face, this was BAD! They basically had two choices, tow it back to the factory and change out the engine, OR, send it to Detroit Diesel to have them deal with it, as it wasn't Freightliners Fault, it fell to the Engine Manufacture to make it right! So, it was immediately towed 50 miles north to the Detroit dealer and they immediately tore into the engine, what they found was insane, the engine had been assembles with out any piston rings in ALL 6 cylinders! The Factory sent a hotshot truck with a brand spanking new engine as fast as they could, and 4 days later, my buddy finally got his truck!
[IMG]This was the last year for the Classic XL series, and they were really booked up to build the last ones, they were less expensive then a Pete or KW of roughly the same specs, and were HUGELY popular due to the amount of room and amazing ride quality! Buddy ordered his loaded with every option and upgrade, paid $120,000 for it upfront, and was super stoked to be getting his first BRAND NEW truck after nearly 15 years of driving! You can imagine how pissed he was when he went to take it home and it was all sorts of messed up! To their credit, both Freightliner AND Detroit Diesel made right with him, they both comped him nicely for things like his first set of new tires when the time came, and free truck washes for the life of the truck! Stil, what a bummer!

Back in 2013, I bought a Peterbuilt sleeper truck for the family farm business, it have a gizillion miles on it, but the price was right and I had a deal with my local Cat engine shop to do a full inframe rebuild so we did the deal and life was good, for about 3000 miles, I was heading back to Oregon just south of Tracy Ca. when she dropped an injector, pulled off the side of the road and called for a wrecker, 4 hours later and they towed me into the local Cat dealer in Redding and the shop tore into it while I found a hotel and crashed! Next morning they called me and let my know my truck was done, so I caught a cab over and paid them and fired up to find my trailer and hit the road! GOt almost all the way back home and the engine started running really rough, the dealer had only changed the bad injector, and while we are not sure, we think they only rebuilt the failed one, and not installed a new one! So it was back to my buddy's shop and had him tear into it and replace all 6 injectors with BRAND NEW ones, and so far, nearly 300,000 miles later, she is still running her ass off!

@Ura-Ki Or anyone else that can answer this question "...the dealer had only changed the bad injector..."

I'm curious, is it necessary to change all the injectors if one goes bad and why? Is this just for the big rigs (semi-trucks) or for all fuel injector vehicles, diesel and gasoline?

The truck behind me in my avatar pic had one injector changed 7 years and 60k miles ago. The other 5 seem to have held up well.

American made stuff used to be quality now with the forced hiring of the unqualified to meet a minority quota, the decline in work ethic with the current generation, corporations to build cheap US quality has declined. I try to buy old American made stuff and repair it.
