And the loading and unloading. Yeah. Mostly the loading.

 

When I think of hay I always think of Ray Shotwell and Joe King. They were born in the 1880's and 90's and had grown old on the land we cut hay on. They could read the weather, and got it right every year. Adjusted the bailer until they both agreed that the bails were just heavy enough. For me that meant I could barely heft them up onto the hay wagon with both hands and a knee.
Ray was already into his 90's when I was a teenager and he was permanently bent over. Joe King was the tractor man and he could dial in the speed of his machine to set the perfect pace for us all day long. So here I am struggling to heft bails onto the wagon when I see him walking along in front of me. He was hooking one string with his thumb, and then snagging the other with the bony fingers of the same hand... and without ever breaking his stride, he was tossing bail after bail onto the wagon. It looked effortless. His movements were so smooth and efficient. A lifetime of handling bails of hay every day, milking cows, chopping wood.

 

The instructions were unclear.

 

Not if read from a rear view mirror....an ECNALUBMA usually has lights and sirens to proclaim their presence to mirror image illiterates.

 

Around here we still read from left to right, even in a mirror.

 

No, to read it in a mirror, not just the order of the letters need to be reversed, so do the letters themselves. So the E, N, C, L and B need to be reversed to their mirror image also. So the instructions were maybe unclear or the thinking was.

 

Some can make sense of what is written, whether it be right to left or left to write(sic), and even if some letters need to be reversed...some languages such as Hebrew are written from right to left...
