They tell me that a lion tamer uses a chair to point the 4 legs at the lions to keep them at bay.
In the same way, I figure that if it became necessary, having a significant point to aim at an approaching predator "might" sway it from doing something stupid.
Merely having and brandishing the weapon may not be enough, in which case, one should have the will to use it with the aggression with which one is initially being threatened.
I made a walking staff that is a multi tool which has several tools that can held by it, one of which is an old broken bayonet another is a spearhead.
Obviously, these need to be applied while hiking and not something put on at the last minuet.
Lone predators can tend to be discouraged, however 2 or more encourage one another to continue the pursuit, all the more reason to establish one's own aggression at first contact. You may not be aware of being watched. Been there done that.

Keep the bayonets, I will keep my scope. My general rule is that anything trying to kill me should never be allowed close enough to do so. Bayonets were a necessary tool of warfare when battles were fought with single shot weapons on heavily populated battlefields, and followed by tradition into both world Wars were they saw some use in trenches and skirmishes. For civilian use it just gives more favorable odds to the enemy IMHO.

Bayonets are the last line of defense when ammo is gone --I'm hoping it never comes to that

I tried tying a knife to a stick to kill a rattlesnake, but that didn't work out as I had fantasized.
Not that i am fond of putting something on the end of a barrel that might compromise it's accuracy if mistreated.
I think I'd be more inclined to put a ramrod under the barrel instead.

Not really that good with single shot weapons as they get in the way when reloading. It's hard to get off those 3 aimed shots per minute with a bayonet attached to your Enfield rifle (or Springfield). The order to "FIX BAYONETS" was usually given in the seconds before the two lines clashed,... seconds that could be used to get off one last shot and then use your rifle as a club!
