please share your thoughts on what is a good reliable router... then if your a gamer what you feel is a good router... thanks... as the one I currently have seems to be having some serious issues... can't log into the wired part anymore says it has a bad address part of the time and part of the time it says refused and the wifi is getting iffy... updated the firmware too... hmm... maybe do a re-update but... OH and is a rather expensive gaming router... but think i'm going with a cheaper all around type this time... anyways please advise and thanks

You are looking for speed, correct? Assuming wireless as well? Also not a technogeek that can geek up his own, correct? Your first bottleneck is your Internet connection. If it maxes out at 1 G there is nothing your router can do to improve on that. ITEM: is your current upload and download speed adequate? ITEM: Can you increase the upload and download speeds provided by your ISP is required? ITEM: Your router must be capable of handling the maximum speed your ISP provides on both the Incoming and outgoing port sides. It's built in switch also must support that amount of traffic. The next bottleneck is the connection to your gaming computer. While a wired connection if FAR preferable for security purposes most will prefer the convenience of wireless. Regardless the computer's network adapter must also meet or exceed the speed provided by the ISP. ITEM: What is the speed of the computers network adapter and can it be increased if it is less than the speed provided by the ISP and/or your router? For "all in one" network routers I usually recommend Asus. There is an active community of enthusiasts that have taken advantage of this router's ability to run alternate operating systems and write enhanced versions as open source. If you insist on wireless then get a model that supports 802.11ax (WiFi 6), and make sure you configure it to not advertise the network name. I'd go to the point of a randomly generated name and password. Special "Gamer" routers are just marketing terms. Look at technical details and not Salesman Smarm. Note that these usually max out at the standard 1 G interfaces. ITEM: Your current router is probably just fine unless it's aged enough to justify replacemant. To support faster network speeds you will need something a lot more expensive and involved to manage. These will be along the lines of @sec_monkey 's solutions. That will likely require an additional switch and/or wireless access points that support the higher network speeds. You will get MUCH better security as well as network intrusion detection and response capabilities. ITEM: Big time network performance comes with relatively big time money. The last link in the chain is your computer. Is the bottleneck there, assuming it's not network related? Do you have an adequate CPU? What about the video card? Have you tried more memory? ITEM: The weakest link in the chain determines throughput. Identify that forst, resolve and reassess. Wash, rinse, repeat as necessary.

Mikrotik. Has a built in web interface, tools, traffic shaping, you name it. I use an RB750 in my radio room, HAP ac2 in the house, RB1100 as my main interface, and 1 watt Metal for my outdoor. The RB5009 sounds like what you may be looking for and a HAP ac3 for your wireless. RB5009UG+S+IN | MikroTik hAP ac³ | MikroTik I prefer individual networks as opposed to VLANs for the security.
Wish I could use the Sec Monkey Enterprise Routers. I am stuck with Hughes which is like not having internet at all, Verizon Wireless and maybe someday starlink. That being said I have always been happy with the Verizon Jet pack and the 4GLTE it had until they upgraded the tower to 5G. Still run the 4GLTE and run 460/500 MBS Transmit/Receive on it. 5G Jet Pack runs 1133/1133 MBS T/R I get 150Gigs Per Month on each. I tether the 5G to the main PC and use the 4G as a hot spot for everything else 2 Desk Tops, 2 lap tops, ROKU TV etc. Hughes was running like 45/422 T/R MBS Was ok for streaming in and totally worthless for anything else. The New smart phone I only recently learned how to make a wireless hot spot with and it seems to run speeds 400/400 T/R MBS but a VERY limited range like it has to be within 20 feet of say the ROKU TV. But my gaming consist of Ultima Online and RuneScape and I run pretty hefty video cards and At least 128-256 DDR Corsair Vengence Ram sticks Way over kill for the gaming I do but handy for the video and video editing I do. LOL the main TV I just use a cheap $100 Antenna and get from 40-77 channels depending on which direction I rotate it to My bedroom on the other hand its getting kind of screen crazy ROKU TV I got to see if I liked it is the 32" screen in the middle. Sec Cam Screens either side of it. 3 more 27" Computer Screens to left and three 20" Sec Cam Screens opposite wall. Was initially a bit tricky getting the wireless to work in the bedroom. 22"W 72" tall 1/4" Steel plates inside the walls between the studs all the way around the bedroom in the walls under the insulation. Not very conducive to the Jet packs connecting with the tower... Until it dawned on my little pea brain to sit the Jetpacks in the window sill with Clear LOS to the Tower 1 mile away. LOL had to stick a 2x4 under the shelf because the last case of shotgun shells I put on it started bending the shelf bracket under it. Going to cut four 2x6s with 45s on the ends to buff the whole shelf support up before I buy in or tote more ammo from the armory to the bedroom! Still in the process of the Cabin Remodel and being able to lay up on the ass in Bed and drinking wine and eating Bon Bons while watching the TV does not help in getting it finished LOL A friend that has been helping me with some stuff that requires 2 people to do....... Tells me my Cabin Remodel in particular my Bedroom is not going to be helpful if I decide I ever decide I want to stop being a Monk and and appeal to a Woman. "Screens/Guns/Ammo are not exactly Romantic!" Or so she tells me. Anyway the Jet packs act just fine as routers of a sort for me. I can connect all of the compatible together with USB or Ethernet Cables into a closed network with no outside internet connected to the actual server in the command center located in the Root Cellar. Two more Computers and 8 more screens in the Command Center room of the Root Cellar + the server. I am putting a Hub/Router in the bedroom to connect all the new crap to the Root Cellar. Its not that I don't trust one drive and the cloud but I don' trust One Drive and the cloud. Although I do use them for off site storage of the video/audio from the sec cams and the logs of the sensor alerts. Also the same data gets dumped on to the server once per Week or Month. Best to keep video/Audio files of interpersonal conflicts and interactions stored in multiple places on and off site. but my router between Bedroom and Command center is so simplistic and unsecure as to be laughable but it is for a internal network only and the best security are the server fire walls and simply unplugging the connection on either end of the cable between the bedroom and the Root Cellar and never connecting the two when there is a active internet connection on in the Bedroom or before doing full Virus/Malware scans on the networked bedroom computers and slaves. Dealing with anything that gets on the internet connected computers is a PITA Dealing with stuff that gets on the Server and Root Cellar Computers is a TOTAL NIGHTMARE PITA. And yes I know I should transition everything to LINUX and just be done with most of the malware worries Maybe someday I will take the time to to learn LINUX stuffs..... But there ain't time in my world to learn entire new OS right now.

I am looking forward to the day they tell me I can try starlink out! Hughes would be kind of OK if it were not for the horrible upload speeds. 33.6 dial up was better than Hughes most of the time LOL

I had my Starlink on order for about 8 months before I received it in ... March 2022? I think? You'll like it. I stream TV while surfing on it, no problems. If I were a gamer it might be an issue, but speed tests often exceed 100 mb/sec where I am. Not as fast as cable, but that's not available. Verizon, where my remote property is located is iffy for phone and you could take a nap watching your e-mail upload.
still having router issues but after checking could be the modem provided by the isp that is the cause??? problem is identical with new router so?
Well, if it's a modem that you're renting from them, tell them what's going on and try swapping it out. If that doesn't do it, they've probably got cable problems unless it's a bad Ethernet cable running from your router to your modem.
was not the router or the modem... cable was run under the house... apparently was damaged? field mice? ran new cable inside house and fixed... ugh bought a new router already... <sigh> stupid! should have checked for cable connection with a extra cable I have first!!!
