Wonder how expensive oranges are going to be later this year.

@natshare I think we just missed each other. I was there from 89- 91. It's really nice that you got to spend time with your sister there and then come back for more island life. It's sounds live you've had an adventurous life. It's good that you went back to spend time with your Dad (sorry about your loss.) It's hard to be away from family. My bf and I bought this property sight unseen and neither of us had ever been to the Big Island before we moved here. It ended up being even better than I expected. I think I was hoping that I would be able to convince my sister and my parents to also move out here, but my dad is in poor health. I was going to visit them this winter, but they both got covid and told me it's probably better for me to stay put.

Stay safe! I hate all of the bugs and pests that humidity and warm weather brings. Hopefully it will be milder after this arctic cold. Thinking of you!

Next week the highs will be climb into the 60s and the lows will be above freezing...it's just winter in Dixie! If you don't like the weather, just wait, it will change and not necessarily for the better!

We made about a gallon and a half of bean soup with 3lbs of lean stew meat.
Ain't nobody loosing weight around here tonight!

Went for a walk today with my sisters and nieces, and then went sledding. It was a nice day. Might do it again tomorrow.

Just think, Billy, if you moved up this way, you could do that every day for 5-6 months!

Nah, then the magic would fade, and I'd start dreaming of moving down South when I retire. I've lived here my whole life; I'm living the dream! I have NEVER owned a snow shovel!

I'll stick to the mitten. We don't have alligators, hurricanes, softball size hail (rare) and only a few tornadoes and nearly none in the UP. Yeah, it's cold for a few weeks ... but the summers are glorious.

I live in northern Alabama and I'm 300 miles from the Gulf, so no hurricanes, although they can be tropical storms when they reach us. Alligators are rare enough that they make the news. The biggest hail that I have ever seen was only nickel or quarter size. We do have severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, but you learn to live with it, and I have NEVER heard that train sound. The summers are long, hot and humid, but it tends to keep out the riffraff (aka Yankees). For really bad weather you have to go to Texas! They have it all and usually all on the same day, because Texas is a big place!

VT, you forgot poisonous snakes, termites, and any kind of lizard. Also keeps the southerners out, at least until summer.

Good point. Except for the Lizards. I've seen them at Love's.

Snakes are fairly rare too! If you don' t mess with them they won't mess with you! We got termites, but who doesn't? That's what treated wood is for! What we do have are FIRE ANTS! Y'all got them yet? The last lizard I saw was a salamander, and that was some time ago. I live in a kinda "Cinderella Zone" not too anything, it's just about right!

No termites. No fire ants. That lizard VT mentioned came on a truck of pine mulch from somewhere down south, I’d guess.
Flies, ticks and skeeters can be annoying here.

Had a water supply line to a toilet freeze up last night, but the temp. got up to a toasty 34F, sun came out, and I applied some heat, and it broke loose. I placed a thin knife blade under the flapper and the water cycles on about every minute, that should keep it from freezing again., Just have to keep this up until Monday!

Chiggers are almost as bad as the FIRE ANTS! Then skeeters (ours are bigger than yours), flies, and ticks.

Florida has the fireants! And the aptly named "Giant House Spider"! A big mofo with up to a three inch legspread. Laughs at Spider Spray. But a .22 Colibri dispatches the nicely. (y)

All you tree hugging EV owners how's your EV running in this sub zero weather ===not so good I bet this from the commie news net work
(CNN) — With temperatures bottoming out across the country, electric vehicle drivers are probably noticing their driving range plummeting. Here’s why it keeps happening – and there’s more to it than you might think.

Tests by the consumer advocacy group Consumer Reports showed that EV driving range
dropped by about 25% in highway cruising, on average, in sub-freezing weather, compared to days with warmer outside temperatures.

Use the heater and your battery lasts even less
