FedGov Space Weather Plan (reaction to)

Attached is the US FedGov plan on how they plan to plan for 'bad' space weather. Think flare + CME. No power, no sewer, no water pumping, nuke plants going haywire, the full enchilada.

Many years ago, O-Bam-Ma, the Sun god Emperor of the earth, decreed the FedGov would devise and implement a plan on how to deal with the massive disruptions and almost certain chaos that would follow.

ie Your tax dollars at work. All these years later, and oddly just as the Christmas holiday (slow news) season starts, this gets dropped. Suprise.

How comprehensive is this plan? Well, all 13 pages cover ----nothing. I have to wonder who they farmed this out to (to write the document) as it is - at best - fluff and Federal bafflegabble at it's worst.

Yup, if it (CME etc) hits, you are on your own..... Not a surprise, eh?

I was involved (to a very minor degree) in this back at the time. My role was grid threat identification and non-technical.

ERCOT did implement and install some near instantaneous trip to ground switching for the high power transmission lines to protect infrastructure across the Texas grid.

Also the power plant protective equipment was improved and testing was upgraded to knock a plant off-grid almost instantly to protect itself.

That doesn't mean any of the neighborhood level transformers got improved. I wasn't around anymore to hear if that even got in the plan.

 

I would loved to know how much this study cost the taxpayer...wait. No, I wouldn't.

EDIT: WTH? This isn't an 'implementation plan'! This is nothing more than a data gathering plan for which they will ask money to do so to figure out what they need. The title of the document is totally misleading...probably done on purpose.

 

It's safe to say they don't even understand the problem.
