I did it that way for a long time then a few years ago I changed to packing them in straws, they fit in my Survival Tin better and take more abuse. Top to bottom: Fatwood, Char Cloth, PJCB in straw, 3 UCO Matches with striker, I'm changing from char cloth to 0000 steel wool in my kits, it holds up better in the straws, Char Cloth in circle, Steel wool in action,
I have used petroleum jelly / Vaseline cotton ball firestarters stored in a 35mm film canister...the thought occurred to me that cotton buds daubed with Vaseline may also work. Will try it out 4S&Gs.
Dryer lint with candle wax poured on it works also. I've also wondered how a fire piston worked. Tanks for the post.
I don't carry a 9 volt, but I carry aa Lithiums for my lighting, and two of them work for me. My main use of the steel wool is for beating on my tools to make flint and steel fire, knives, machetes, saws, hawks and the cold steel shovel have all given me fire. It has become my favorite for my Survival Kits.
