I qualify for Canadian citizenship. I simply cannot imagine saying this: “I swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada, and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen.” (edit..I suppose that's King whats-his-name now) Because I've already said this: I, Zimmy, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God. I guess I'm old fashioned but I don't just make oaths like that frivolous. Nor can I demean them for financial gain. Thats what I say today, anyway.
I feel ya, Zimmy. If I could spreche Deutsch a bit better, I qualify for German citizenship. But since the whole of Germany now seems to be a dumpster fire, I see no gain in bothering to up my language skills that way....
I took that oath once myself over 40 years ago ,, and still believe it to be so today. I don't think swearing an oath to people these days means what it used to . It used to be an unbreakable bond . Nowadays,, I just don't think it means much to some folks . I have nowhere else to go ,, so I'll be sticking around here till the end . Maybe some of us will meet on the starting line ,,
