We had a break-in at the barn many years ago, they stole a few tools and an old 16 GA bolt-action shotgun. The sheriff's deputy came around a few days later to make-out a report for insurance purposes but made it plain that they were not interested in catching the thieves. My BIL was home at the time and said that we would do better to go after them ourselves, and the deputy told him that was against the law! My BIL just asked him how they would ever find out!
