As it starts getting dark earlier I've come home a couple nights and found that there are three identically shaped keys on my regular key ring. Only one of them is slightly different in the opening at the top. Trying to see this detail by starlight without ruining my night vision was getting old quick. One simple move to separate that key from the others lets me pick the right key every time. All the other keys are either divided from the others by a screwdriver bit or handcuff key, are a unique shape, or have notches filed into them. Fumbling with keys in the dark makes you vulnerable, it's really annoying, and it's avoidable. It's a quick drill to go through your key ring without looking and see if you can identify every key. You might even find mystery keys that no longer fit anything. Give it a try.
I've put my house key right beside the Fob ,, or , I have a clip on all me key chains so I can clip to my belt loop ,, and the house key is next to the clip ,, or between the clip and Fob. And whichever key chain I grab ,, house key is next to that trucks key ,, so no matter which one I grab ,, my routine is the same.
Mine are in a specific order. I usually locate the key I want before the keys are out of my pocket while I'm walking to the house, car, mailbox, etc.
But can you find them when the power is out and you're trying to get into the door without lighting yourself up?
I have one , in my pocket , opens all my doors , keyed alike . I also tumbler them and change the key strikes just to keep things here. cars have the keys inside them on the ranch, outside the ranch then i have keys on me
i painted every key in an other bright colour wich correspondents with the lock and with the light of the cellphone i identify them.
Yep. While I have a larger bunch of keys the three required to access my home from any point are on a separate ring that is easy to locate from the main group (which is mailbox, garage, various padlocks and :some specialist keys). Those three are each easily discernible from each other.
All my life I've carried more than a dozen keys, dad had a lot of property and equipment and several cars including antiques, and having a key machine I made keys as well and retumbled locks too. I had several master lock padlock keys I knew the cut well enough to feel them in my hand. Now days not so much .
I have considered a motion detector light at my gate and door but I don't like being highlighted in the dark. Like wearing one of those lights on my head. It makes for a nice target. Then again I tend to use my cell phone light to walk around in the dark after I had a nasty fall. I won't be doing this if things take a turn for the worse. I can hold my keys up and see them because of neighbors' lights. I know what key opens the door.
Yes. Yes I can. Each car key has a different fob and has different keys. There is the going up north ring. Going to work ring MrsVT's ring Going to rental ring. and the kids have their own purpose loaded ring. Feel the fob, you know what you got. One car, one gate, one door
I should note, there are a number of GM vehicles that their ignition cylinder failed (wear) due to heavy keyrings loaded up with all kinds of unecessary crap. Also, if you lose your massive key ring of like 20 keys .. the person that finds it .. has access to all your locked stuff.
Yes I know my keys.i have a compass on a strap with keyring on each end.house key and post office key on one end.the part that attach to the ring is shaped different and the house key is shorter.the four keys on the the other.i know what order their in.if there's a brown/black out and I need to unlock the door from the outside.and do so in the dark.only issue I might have is getting the key into the keyholes.
I can tell the house, truck and 'Buru key by feel. The others lack relevance, really. There's only 5, total. If somebody threatening was waiting to shoot me in the house doorway the damned motion light would come on and I would have to bust through at a run like the Kool-Aid man!
Since I still carry the key for my house in Texas on my keyring, I put one of those plastic sleeves on the key for the apartment I'm living in. Plus, the house is a Schlage key, and the apartment is Kwikset, so it's easier to tell them apart. The car is keyless entry and ignition, so as long as I have the fob, I'm good to go.
