Who has experience with buying fur, where must take care of in buying fur and look at? After 10 years off off-grid living we ( special my wife ) wanted try something new. We both wanted to get more outside of human being, we wanted become more inside of animal being, we wanted to become a sort of animals. The first step we wanted to take is to change from wearing denim/cotton/wool into wearing fulltime 24/7 fur, just because wearing fur we going to look more animality. On etsy we found 2 fantastic coyote fur suits from OliversFurs compagnie, that takes our intrest, and this is also how we wanted to look like 24/7 when we reached our goal to living as animals. No we don't have experience with buying fur, are here people with fur buying experience and can advice us ?
Have you considered trapping or hunting your own ? It’s the most authentic way. You can brain tan the hides yourself.
Yes but than we must take a course for a hunting license and after this paying a hug amount of euro's to hunt and register every animal that we hunt, that isn't that wat we want this takes a lot of time, before we can hunt, and if in our area are too many hunters we can't get a hunting license at all.
I do believe that In some parts of Ukraine, they aren't so particular about hunting licenses and bag limits.
Not familiar with anything other than USA and have not been a fur buyer since the mid 80s. But it much more feasible to trap your own and learn to flesh and dry the pelts and learn the art of fur on tanning than to buy them already tanned. After that it no different than lining and sewing together any other material. Multiple ways to tan from brain tanning, urine and smoke or the commercial compounds. I am currently working on a collection a Fox Squirrels to make a new coat with The trick to fur side staying furry is good fleshing and yet not scraping the hide to thin into the hair roots. Also good stretching and drying is a must. Most things Coons, muskrats, Fox and Coyote I do as unsplit pelts. Squirrels and Rabbits I split down the underside middle and dry on round or oval frames. Also Split Cattle, Hog and Deer hides down the middle and dry on very big round frames. This one as are the entire collection of fox squirrels Urine tanned and smoke cured. I just have not pounded them to soft and supple yet. Splitting down the middle on the Squirrels and Rabbits get more milage out of a pelt than sewing them together and onto the backing than unsplit. It takes a lot tree rats to make a coat!
So you only want to Play at being a predatory animal but don’t want to be one yourself by actually hunting?
Therre was an online resource for buying firs, the price varies depending on availability and demand. You are going to have to learn to sew but that's all part of woods living. It might be helpful to know that the early Indians did not do well with just firs and traded for blankets and cloth ASAP. Tents made of skin are very heavy and require a lot of care verses canvas which is half as heavy or less, but can take the weather much better. I suggest that instead of going cold turkey, start off with all the modern conveniences of camping available and slowly ween yourself off those things, but have them to fall back on should things get really serious. Been there, done that.
@mysterymet if i say'd before it's hard to get a hunting license here the government has decided in 2017 to limited wild hunting, persons who wanted a license must do a course, and there is only one license for 100 square kilometers left. Fishing is free but also limited to 5 months a year without license and if you are illegal hunting and fishing the bills are very high if they find you they are some 2500 euros fine and you can lost your cabin and must return back to the crowded city.
I hate to break it to you, but humans ARE animals: we are members of the animal kingdom, wherein, being furry is not a mandatory taxonomic characteristic. I am not sure why being furry is important, but wearing the furs of another animal would seem to be an aesthetic / lifestyle preference (much like being clothes optional (conditions apply) is for persons who are nudists / into naturism). I am not suggesting that you not wear furs, if that floats your boat, (Though sourcing materials from rare and endangered species may be ethically, if not legally indefensible), certainly fur apparel wearing can be a practical means of living in certain climatic conditions. I'm not sure that wearing fur will necessarily achieve the goal of living as 'animals'...at best it may be a matter of cosplaying living like animals a bit higher in the life biology taxonomy...if one were truly wishing to be living authentically, then one would need to hunt or gather for one's food in the wild, eating it raw and unprocessed, it would mean eschewing modern medical technology, though I guess one could technically be treated by veterinarians, and phew, horse paste (Ivermectin) would probably be totally ok...one would have to live in a burrow or a cave or perhaps in a tree nest I guess, and would not make use of fire for warmth, because only Homo Sapiens does that, after all, for many non human species, that is what fur is for. If becoming a furry is a lifestyle goal, one may consider starting modestly, so to speak, by wearing a fur merkin... Such apparel is available, relatively inexpensively, on eBay, Amazon, Etsy etc...this will enable one to discretely satisfy one's furry inclinations without the public in general thinking one is a weirdo. Seriously though, fur might be sourced by scouring antique shops, charity thrift shops, stage prop shops, estate sales and auctions, or by deconstructing taxidermist specimens if one wants to look like Rocky: or Bullwinkle: YMMV
If you are okay sewing hides into the clothing you want, check out Tandy Leather (tandyleather.com) They have hair on rabbit hides, reindeer hides and deer hides. They aren't cheap but a whole deer/reindeer hide is pretty sizeable. Post some pics when you get something set up, I been wanting to make some fur outer clothing for the cold weather here. -JW
i understand what you are saying but animals don't use a spoon fork or knife to eat, they don't sleep in warm beds. and humans have learned very other skills too what aren't in use by wild living animals. These sort of things we want banned out of our lives. End why is wearing fur important for us, about 80% off all wild living animals have a thick furry skin, we don't have a thick furry skin, so we wanted wearing thick furry skin from others to look the same and have the same skin and natural color that is also our form to get out of the human ( homo-sapiens ) race to connect with an other race we wanted to connect with Canis-Latrans just because we are coyotes but connected with the wrong race on this moment and wanted to go bacj to the race we belong to.
It's basic knowledge,,, if you're wanting to survive in the wild ,, you do as those that are in the wild . Every animal is prey for another animal . I believe the lord put everything here for a purpose ,, some are the use ,, others are the users . If the fur fits ,, wear it .
Well there you go, Spend the 2500 euros on new dud's, Keep the cabin, Tell the warden to suck it and show you're receipt.
I did something years ago. Riding motorcycle in cold weather gets frosty and I thought of wearing fir to shield the cold. So, I bought some fake fir and first made sleeves to see the effect. I was some what surprised how well it worked so I made a hooded jacket of the same fake fir and it too made a difference, so I made pants as well and was pleasantly surprised how comfortable I was however I got a lot of funny looks from people I was passing. "Wookie". In the city it's not a big problem wearing this kind of clothing however it is extremely unwise to wear such a thing in the woods because you may well get shot, NO JOKE people have been shot merely having a white hanky in their back pocket. (Deer tail) Though the Hunter safety course teaches one not to do such things people are stupid and make them self the exception and still get shot. Another problem your going to run into trying to live like animals is the fact you didn't grow up in the woods and your immune system and metabolism are not conditioned to this environment. I lived and played in the mountains a lot growing up and could drink water right out of the creek and never get sick, but visiting city kids did not have the same immunities I did and got sick often attempting to mimic me. It also would be good to know you family's histories to anticipate possible inherited weaknesses that might exist. Most kids inherit their parents weaknesses. Fact.
I am a little lost, I am a live and let live person for the most part but you can’t escape the fact that you are not a coyote or any other form of canine being. What you seem to be proposing ie getting back to what you came from (I am paraphrasing I know) is not correct as you don’t seem to wish to return to early human but another species all together. As I said, I don’t care as long as you cause no harm to me or others, but it makes little sense. Fur is a great insulator, there is a reason that critters survive winter wearing it (but there are more genetic and evolutionary factors involved than this alone). Given your location most here will not understand what you can or can’t source in your area. Etsy is a poor choice for buying about anything. Is there is a skin/fur trade local to you (nationally not just geographically)? That would be where I start. I was a skin/fur buyer for a number of years and for your purposes you are not so much concerned with the higher level (fashion grade) pelts but just good well treated hides/furs that you can tailor.
My wife and i have interest in these 2 suits made in Montreal, Canada. And this is also how we wanted to look 24/7 in the coming months. Yes, wearing a hi viz safety vest over the furry suit would seem to be self defeating. ....I'd also lay off the sexual availability pheromone perfumes and colognes too.
