Most people will remember that disturbing scene in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom where that evil guy rips out some poor suckers heart, and then sends him down into a pit of lava. I just caught that again on the boob tube, and I wondered what that was all about. As we know, Hollywood takes every opportunity to show the occult, so there must be something behind it. Low and behold, there was. Apparently this is a depiction of the Thugees from India who worshipped a god called Kali. Kali was associated with doomsday and death. Kali - Wikipedia The Thuggees were a murderous group of assassins: Thuggee - Wikipedia When reading about Kali, it reminded me of the statue at CERN, which is apparently of the Indian god Shiva: When you look closely at the statue, it is very similar to the God Kali. Stepping on the husband, the husband has his tongue out, skull headdress (Kali has a severed head necklace). There is some relationship between the two gods. They don't give you a warm and fuzzy feeling. There is something to the "sticking the tongue out" thing too. Apparently this is the inspiration behind the Rolling Stones logo. I also suspect it's probably why Miley Cyrus' handlers put her up to sticking her tongue out all the time.
You took till now to figure out Kali is a thing ? I mean the movie has been out for “a couple” of years now.
Yeah, the Thuggees were a big thing in India at one point. I think the Brits finally eradicated them after much effort. Kipling wrote about them also in some of his books. I wonder if this is where we got the term 'thug'? EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I am sure there are still some that follow this Thuggee religion even today.
I was like 7 when it came out. I thought it was just something that Hollywood pulled out of their arse. However, I watched it a bit closer this last time, and the scene where Indy is on the bridge, he actually makes a direct reference to Shiva. There was no internet in 1987, so I couldn't have just Googled Shiva. I also don't think the tin foil hat was invented until at least the 90s.
