Dealing with the problem rather backward. They should have been harvesting the bird for food, hunters would have been doing it for free.
Not so much a matter of winning, but surviving...in that sense they won, mostly....however, humans managed, by various means, to control Emus from damaging farm crops (Lewis Guns were not involved). One such measure of Emu population control was to use hunters to cull the feathered critters in selected areas by offering a bounty for each Emu killed....I doubt much if any Emu flesh was eaten or sold for human consumption.
