Experts Warn of Chigger Bites Causing Scrub Typhus (RightWing.org) – Scientists at the North Carolina State University, Raleigh; University of North Carolina at Greensboro; and the Georgia Museum of Natural History recently released a report involving chiggers and the transmission of scrub typhus, a disease similar to tick-borne Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Those experts warned healthcare practitioners in the region to be on the lookout for possible human cases of the potentially deadly disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published the study’s results in the August edition of its peer-reviewed journal, Emerging Infectious Diseases. In 2022, researchers collected several samples of Eutrombicula chigger mites carrying Orientia spp., a bacteria related to the transmission of scrub typhus. The scientists found the chiggers at five parks in North Carolina. They spanned the region from Morrow Mountain State Park in the state’s central region to Merchants Millpond State Park in North Carolina’s northeastern coastal area. Kaiying Chen, the study’s principal author, told media outlets that this was the first time scientists detected the bacteria that causes scrub typhus in free-living chiggers in the United States. For that reason, researchers could not determine if the presence of those infected mites was a new phenomenon. Likewise, they could not draw any conclusions regarding the prevalence of infected chiggers. According to the CDC, scrub typhus occurs mainly in rural areas of China, India, Indonesia, Southeast Asia, and the northern regions of Australia. Other government agencies like the Virginia Department of Health reported that the officials hadn’t detected the disease in the US except in travelers returning from infected areas overseas. Scrub typhus isn’t spread by human-to-human contact. It is only transmitted through chigger bites. Symptoms resemble the flu and begin about 10 to 12 days after a person is bitten by an infected bug. Healthcare providers can diagnose the disease by observing symptoms or conducting tests. Scrub typhus is treated using antibiotics. However, a 2017 report published by the National Institutes of Health warned that left untreated, the disease had a fatality rate of up to 70%. Fortunately, no cases of scrub typhus have been reported. Additionally, researchers could not determine if Orientia spp. could transmit the disease to humans. Because you/we are going to be faced with the same decisions again. Another article worth reading, written in 1998, is “Resistance to Tyranny is Obedience to God.” Within the article is this insight (emphasis is mine): “Thus the difficulty lies within the individual to decide whether they should obey without question the governmental or civil authorities who are not heeding that which the scriptures plainly state is their duty to do. That of ridding society of evil, according to the standards that God has depicted, and doing so by punishing the evildoer. It would seem that evil has taken on a new definition apart from that which the Bible so clearly states and has now become that which law has stated as such, instead of what God has stated. In other words Law now supersedes God instead of the other way around. Samuel Rutherford, in his book titled Lex Rex suggested that when the State is deliberately committed to destruction of its ethical commitment to God, then resistance becomes appropriate. He goes on to suggest three appropriate levels of resistance. First, he must defend himself by protest, i.e., legal action. Second, he must flee if at all possible, and third, he may use force if necessary to defend himself. Force should not be used if flight can save him. Nor should running away be the answer if he can save and defend himself by means of protest. He further cautioned the distinct difference between lawless civil disobedience and lawful resistance. If possible, resistance should be under protection of duly constituted authorities such as local officials, bearing in mind that the local office is just as much delegated by God as the highest government official.” Since it appears that local officials, including the police, seem to be ‘just following order’, it appears that it is time for us to take the lawful resistance to a new level. Dear Heavenly Father, I’m sure that if You had human qualities, You would be as exasperated with humanity’s loss of direction as many of Your children are. If only our fellow humans would turn to YOU for their security, their health, their future. If only they would pray to You instead of bowing their knee to government and to the pharakia. If only they would dig more into Your word than wasting time on social media looking for direction. Dear Father, help us to lead them to You. Lord, many of us are so weary, so tired of the fight we’re in. Help us to be strong. Help us resist the tyranny that is once again raising its fist to strike us and beat us down. We pray that You will soon show YOUR mighty hand on the earthly playing field so that victory could only and solely be give to You. Encourage us, Lord, to stay in this battle for the very souls of humanity and for Your creation. We pray for a great revival that will praise Your holy name.
