I never noticed that the back of shopping cart lifted up like this. I saw a mom with two kids use this trick. She lifted it up so the bigger child could scamper up into the cart, then closed it and put the smaller child into the seat.
You don't know what you're missing. Or maybe you do, and that's why you're single. As the parent of a building inspector I can tell you that when he was small he was a cute little blonde terror. Even when he was small enough to lift into the seat of the shopping cart we'd end up with random items in the cart at checkout that we hadn't put in there. Until he was almost my height, when he was in fourth grade, one of us had to hold his hand to keep him from climbing on the shelves. He was always happier playing in the woods or on the beach with his friends, and he was really a good kid once he got into high school and discovered girls. I'm sure he remembers me patting him on the head at the Food Lion and asking if he wanted to go for a walk outside. My wedding band is 14mm wide, and it leaves an impression. It'll leave a depression if I pat you on the head too hard. He never did want to go for a walk with me at the Food Lion.
The back gate is easily removed and the trolly used for hauling drunk buddies back to a remote parking lot...
I saw a low tech solution to prevent people getting accidentally locked in the vault (stamp vault?) at the Post Office. They had a big piece of chain bolted to the wall above the door. It caught between the outer plate of the door and the frame. Couldn't close the door without reaching up and moving the chain. Very low tech, but effective.
This is the 'Oresund Bridge' that starts out as a bridge in Sweden, turns into a tunnel under the sea & reappears in Denmark. Not as impressive when you see it this way. Tunnel is 3.5 km long. For comparison the Detroit-Windsor tunnel, completed in 1928 is 1.57 Km, and the longest underwater tunnel in the world, Japan’s Seikan Tunnel, completed in 1998 is 53.9 Km. I got a chuckle out of the stats on the 37.9 Km long Channel Tunnel from the UK to Northern France. The tunnel was formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II in May of 1994, although plans and discussion had already began back in 1802. Sounds like some of the road construction projects around here.
This display trick, using glasses to hold the top heavy copper funnels is practical as well. When you get done fueling your lamp or lantern you just drop the funnel in the glass. Any remaining fuel drips will quickly evaporate with no mess. Larry the Lantern Guy has a nice funnel collection.
