With a little tweaking the same chart could demonstrate the downfall of Detroit. The start of it all was higher taxes and fees. That was what started the mass migration to the suburbs and beyond. Most kids parents I knew growing up worked in auto plants or at the GM proving grounds. Commuting 90 miles daily to Flint or Detroit was favorable to ever-increasing taxes.

It worked well until the plants started to close and move to Mexico or overseas. I'd like to see the cycle of decline turn around, but I don't think the bottom has been reached yet.
