Apparently, 2 years ago today was the day that I moved 250 quails to my house and back to perform surgery. It was a bit of an ordeal, but I got through it with minimal losses and ordered pizza afterwards. P.S. The pizza memory is significant because I'm on day #28 of keto and wish I could order pizza tonight. That one day that I moved over 200 quails twice by Alanaana posted Mar 12, 2023 at 19:01
@CraftyMofo Thank you so much! It's words of encouragement like this that keep me going! I think it's going pretty well so far and this is the longest that I've stuck with any kind of clean eating without "cheating." I feel a little more tired overall, but when it's time to sleep, I can't so I'm getting lots of good reading done Feels a little bit restrictive, but I haven't deviated much in my foods and am trying to add some variety. I got some good suggestions here in the forum and started visiting YouTube to learn more and get some ideas. Overall, I do feel really good. I don't have the ravenous cravings, I feel like my brain is working better, and my energy is more steady. I'm very thankful that I finally decided to start working towards better health. Thanks again for asking. It helps to talk about it because it reminds me why I started in the first place.
Coot are petty hard on other ducks to! Will kill the eggs. They got ugly feed, sure is fun to water swat em though!
@Alanaana TTT Things Take Time !!!! I have a Friend " Lady" and im treading slow ! TTT Just don't look for next week , one global travel at a time . Sloth
@Cruisin Sloth Thank you for this beautiful reminder! Sometimes I forget and feel impatient. It's good that you're treading slow because the best things really do take time and they are more meaningful that way too. I love these reminders I have from you now: "Keep a Level Head." "TTT"
Great article. Grew up hunting wild quail with my dad in MO. Very challenging sport, and very fun. Good to learn of your experience with farming them. Believe we were shooting Korean quail.
@Navyair Thank you very much! I imagine that quails are fun and challenging to hunt. They are kind of spastic and it's so interesting how they fly straight up. I really enjoyed my flock. There were times when they would escape and they really put in a good effort to get away, but don't have survival skills. There was even one that hopped onto the trampoline and bounced a few times
Ducks get as close as they can to where you are. Then they shit on everything and drink water. Then they shit on everything again to keep it nasty until you eat them. It doesn't seem as attractive at that point as in the beginning 5x I tried free range ducks. Never again. I am a huge fan of both quail meat and the pickled eggs!
Dad and I never hunted quail, though it was very popular here in North Florida. Back in the late 90s when I worked airport security, we would see a lot of styrofoam boxes filled with frozen quail come through the baggage x-ray. Hunters came down, shot the birds on plantations, had them cleaned, frozen and boxed, then took them back home on their flight. We did do some occasional dove hunting here, but they were pretty scarce.
We used to hunt wild quails but now the raccoon population has exploded that these bandits eat quail and turkey eggs. We could use a good raccoon flogging in the parish.
@Zimmy What kind of ducks did you have? I've always wanted to get Runners and I was trying to choose between them and quails. I am glad that I went with the quails because I probably would have had a similar experience as you. I was going to try to free range the ducks and let them run The neighbors still have ducks and they are super noisy. The wild pigs rob their nests too. Quail meat is so good and I like how easy it is to butcher them. Pickled eggs are delicious too.
@Gator 45/70 I do not miss raccoons one bit! My hometown was riddled with them and they even made the news a few times because there was a gang of them torturing and killing the neighborhood cats. They are hardcore and so strong too. Don't mess with opposable thumbs. Lol. I was just thinking of Turkeys. Near the Mauna Kea access route there are a bunch of wild turkeys that were imported from Oklahoma. I want to hunt some soon. I heard that you can do it here without getting in trouble. Turkey chicks are so cute, but I know that they get loud and annoying when they grow up.
@Zimmy We have LFAs (little fire ants) and while they're not like the full sized fire ants, they still sting for being so little. Thankfully, I was able to keep them away from my quails. I try to "treat" my property and the surrounding properties, but they are insidious especially since I have a lot of tall trees and a jungle like setting.
@Seawolf1090 I bet you had some quality people watching as airport security! That seems like an efficient way to acquire quail meat. We have a ton of zebra doves here and the cats are constantly hunting them.
I saw so much produce go through our airport! The quails, local pork sausage, local honey, local berry jelly, and others. Made my mouth water.
