Reminds me of doing a "five minute tune-up" on my old AMC car in the K-Mart parking lot back in the day!

Had a 56 chevy 2 dr with a 327 always carried a extra set of points rotor and condenser. Big 4 barrel carb those were the days gas was 30 cents a gallon

I think Cruisin Sloth correctly identified the distributor in the picture, but a Ford won't run without a distributor cap.

Maybe I didn't make that clear enough. I used to win bar bets with a car that had a points style distributor. I could take the distributor cap and wires and the rotor button off and throw them in the front seat, hook up the coil wires and start the engine. You could watch the points open and close as you handed over the money.:)

What engine can you do that on?

And looks like the ignition key was left in the on position instead of using the acc. position while listening to the tunes.

The engine has two coils, and no pistons. The points trigger the coils. Hooking the coil wires to the plugs will fire them directly without needing the distributor cap or plug wires.

    The engine?

    The Wankel rotary.

I thought the Wankel was going to take off --to add horse power add rotors. I seem to remember they had a problem with seals and it just seemed to die out ---shame simple design and a heck of a lot less parts.

Not to be confused with a VW engine just doing its thing
What finally killed the original Wankel was shitty gas mileage - something like 17MPG - city or HI way. Worked with a guy at Nellis AFB had one. He really Loved everything -- but the MPG....

Bingo! They stink. They're obnoxiously noisy, and they aren't emission friendly. My RX7 gets 10MPG and the land speed car gets 1 MPG. At the Maxton Mile I could make three passes and have to refill the five gallon fuel cell. Same engine with different carburetor jetting set a record in E/Real Street that still stands and got 21 MPG driving there and back. I drove the car to work every day for twelve years in the same basic tune. It's 53 years old now. When I retire I'll probably put it back on the street. I miss merging onto US40 in second gear.;)
